Better make sure that the workplace is located in the city proper, Guangzhou is huge and most of it can't be described as city. You don't want to end up in Panyu, Baiyun or worse Nansha with 1 to 2 hours commute just to get to the edge of the city.

The nice part of Guangzhou is Tianhe District, especially in the New City area.
Wouldnt be a bad place to live.
But yeah +1 to eorthisio cause every chinese city is like that. Tons of places that are technically GZ/SH/SZ/BJ but so far away from anything nice you'd be better off living in the downtown of a 2nd tier city.
You'll have more access to a real life in downtown Nanjing or Wuhan or some[place than in some distant factory/farm suburb of an international city. May not even be served by the metro

Actually just a small part of Tianhe is (kind of) liveable(-ish). Outside of New Town and Sports Center, it's all random ghettos with random buildings and your usual swarms. Even the "nice center" is already swarmed and frankly starting to fall apart (they're building a new financial district, right across the avenue where Metro is).
I'd say Haizhu or Yuexiu. Might not look as new but still better than living around Hunanese bumpkins.

Also, living in Panyu or Baiyun isnt that bad. Panyu has the largest population of foreign residents in all of GZ. Plus it has the transportation to the city center ( Subway, buses, taxies) to get you there in a half hour. It also has better costs of living and its own conveniences for foreigners. Western Foods, pubs, Burger King, imported food shops ect.
