Q: just another Sunday banking in China horror story

I just now, 15 minutes ago, withdrew 5000RMB from my Canadian bank card. Then I deposited it back in my Bank of China account. Just the ATM told me my money was no good and ate it and spit out my card. (The money it just gave me)

I called the security guy and showed him the receipt thing. (transaction cancelled- is what the machine said - the receipt was in Chinese) went to a bank window and cursed and jumped up and down and  basically got very frustrated.

they told me to come back tomorrow. they called my wife and told her to tell me, to 'CALM DOWN!

I will go back tomorrow and I will be angry again...  the ATM guy is supposed to be there.

As of right now, I am out 5000RMB. This could be a SUNDAY  story...but whatever story it is, it is a word of caution to banking in China

the money it spit out to me had corners folded 1/4inch folds on one corner ( top left). first time I did not notice, second time, I straightened the folds...and it just ate the cash and spit out my card.

I remember a news story here on GZ tv where a journalist phoned the bank to complain about the exact same thing, and they got the same answer.

So then the journalist went to another ATM on a Sunday, and phoned the bank to say the machine was giving out double money.... an engineer was there within 10 minutes Smile

dongbeiren:

Once a 20,000 rmb withdrawl out of my bank account  was mistakenly calculated as a 20,000 rmb deposit netting me 40,000 mistakenly. My wife called the bank and representatives were there to meet my wife and take her to the bank in minutes. Funny thing is any time I want to do anything at the bank I need my passport. Well, she explained to the bank reps that she didn't have my passport on her but they assured her it was no problem. They should have at least given us a novelty pen or something for our honesty.

I hope they don't try to say that since there is the chance you changed the bank notes with fake money there's nothing they can do about it. I read of a similar thing happening once, the machine issued fake money then the bank staff refused to take responsibility for it.

On the off chance it does happen, remember you will be on the security camera taking the money from the machine then putting it back into the machine.  May help your case.

thanks guy.....   the camera reminder is a good thing

Yup, the number ONE place I hate going in China... by far is the bank. The second... is the hospital.  It scares the living hell out of me.

People that deal with money and health are usually the biggest morons in China. If I was a QA inspector and held these places up to even HALF of Western standards... I would have closed ALL of them as soon I got into the front door.

Sorry to hear about that. Obviously a bad China day... they should resolve it tomorrow... things do get done in China... eventually... with as little effort or result as possible... but it does.

You do understand that this is China. The ATMs are shitty so you should know not to put so much in at one time. And you should have called the police. Typically, 'come back tomorrow' means I will not be here tomorrow.

I had an ATM eat my card last year then spit out a receipt for it. It was on a Sunday and I was told to come back on Monday because the ATM person didn't work that day.

That's probably all this is too.

They should have you and your record on ATM security video, don't worry you'll get the money back. I had the same issue as well and I only got the money back because of the security video, yes that tiny video camera that points at you. Now I send money online.

FYI ... I do it with an ATM because it is considerably cheaper than using an intermediary bank....  I have been arguing with my Canada bank for a year.....  they used to do it simply....now they charge ludicrous fees. cost me $5 per ATM transaction and I have to do it 4 times to get my 10,000 every month. wire transfer would cost me $40-$50 ....  ATM $20.

you can believe this or not

I just got a phone call from a guy, claiming to represent Bank of China.....local guy or maybe Guangzhou..... apologizing for my dilemma. (spoke good English so I doubt he is from here)

Yes, I do have a relationship with the branch where this happened.. and yes they treat me well. the flipping ATM is to blame and they are correcting it.

My wife is on a black list.. I did nothing wrong.

online banking.... the money is not in my account . promises promises

the cheque is in the mail

promise I won't cum in your mouth ..what is the third famous promise?

Yeah, I knew they would resolve it. They eventually do if you are persistent and jump through all their annoying and ridiculous hoops.

I wish were didn't have to... but Chinese customer service in the banking area needs horribly to be improved.
