Q: Just what is a mailbox for anyway?
It seems like everything that is mailed to me is sent by a guy on a motorbike who has to call my phone to tell me to pick up the mail. Has anyone ever received anything else in their mailbox besides the water and electric bill, or the occasional flyer?
I still get letters from the UK in my mailbox.
The apartment complex I live in have recently installed a parcel system. It's basically lockers with a computerized access. Not sure how you get the code. But the motorbike delivery guys just stick the parcels in there and the adressee punches the code in to collect.
We have a good management committee in our complex. Our monthly service charge is a few hundred RMB a month but they use it to make genuine improvements.

I am yet to see a mailbox in the garden I have lived in for 2 years.

Never received anything but flyers and advertisements in there, mountains of it.
I might check it once every 6 months although I walk past it everyday.
My garden has a parcel system like Scots', if I'm away that's where my package will end up, each building has its own dedicated shelf so it's easy to find your stuff, otherwise the guy there will help you.
I never had a mailbox in China ^^ Now, I have to go the complex's reception and ask them if anything arrived. They look on a paper sheet, and then dig for 15 minutes in an unsorted pile of boxes and mail.
Back home, the mail man put mail in the mailbox marked with your name, every day of the week apart from Sunday, at a roughly fixed time...
Yeah, despite many attempts to stop them, China Mobile kept sending monthly statements to us, also I've gotten letters from back home in the mail box.
At my MILs place they don't have mailboxes, just a guard shed by the entrance where all is dumped in a big pile and then if you go ask if there is anything for you, the guard will start looking through the pile.

Your guard finds it for you? That's service. I have to either recognize my wife's Chinese name, or see her taobao name/phone number. When it's in my MIL's name, that's when the confusion begins.
