Q: kindergarden vs middle school vs highschool vs adult training center

Here's my situation...
offer 1. Offered a job at a KG, 10k, visa done, all legal, in nanjing. I have 0 experience with kids that young. keep my crappy apartment

offer 2. offered job at middle school, also 10K, all legal, in Linyi, Shandong province. Few english speakers there, 20 weekly teaching hours. mediocre apartment. i pay all utilities, internet, etc.

offer 3. Offered a job at a HS, 8K, all legal, in Changshu, Suzhou. 40 km from Suzhou. 12 teaching hours. Beautiful apartment. all utilities/internet paid by the school.

offer 4. offered a job at Meten training center in Nanjing. 12K, Visa, RP, FEC, all registered in Suzhou although I will be working in Nanjing. 5 teaching hours per day. Keep my crappy apartment.*

I'm not sure which one to choose, and would appreciate any imput from people with experience (either with the job types or the various cities)

*My apartment sucks, no internet or washing machine, and washing clothes by hand sucks sonething fierce

Which would you pick?

icnif77:

I just picked Uni in Kaifeng (capital of Chinese Jews), 8000 Rmb for 15 classes/week, free house, 3 x 5-6000 Rmb salaries during recess. I didn't ask about return ticket to Camden, but I guess they'll give that too.

Fuzhou SAFEA replied, Jianou School will give me Release letter and FEC cancel certificate, before I leave Jianou.

I'm keep going on with SAFEA 'news', because 'STFU' were posting SAFEA is useless a month ago. Contrary to my opinion.

No. 3, because it gives you more free time than others (for sleeping, hanging around eChina (O2), or making more dough with 'moonligting').

You must be careful at Contracts with word 'hours'. Chinese don't differentiate between 'teaching hour' and 'hour'.

I don't really believe, they don't know the difference. They do it intentionally as part of their 'negotiating' tactic. First thing I do, when viewing new Contract is make sure meaning of the 'hour': is it 'teaching' (45') or is it full (60') hours.

For apartments, it's 'hit and miss', or till you're not in, you can't know what you'll get. I pay attention only at 'utilities' part: 'who's paying utilities?' Contract must state what is included in the apartment, as 'furnished chicken, TV, Internet, washing machine….'. I don't differentiate on age of students, however 2-5Y olds must be paid more.

I want your reply from the other thread about SAFEA/FEB: 'did you receive help and info from Gov. or no?

I just sent an email to Fujian FEB about my things here.

Spiderboenz:

No. 3 has 45 minute hours. It's a furnished apartment, washing machine and all.

You can double your salary with part-time.

I accepted Contract in Fuk. Public School for 8000Rmb/14 classes per week last year, just because of low hours.

I researched Fuk. on Internet, and Wiki says: 'Fuk. is the city with 1.1M residents'. If city is that big, there will be loads of opportunities for part-time.

My earning estimate in Fuk., was around 20 000 Rmb per month.

When I arrived to Fuk., it's city with no more than 10 000 residents (in 5km diameter). There are no Kindergartens or Training mills in the city, just huge 'outdoor market' with brazillion farmers, however none wanted to learn English. I spoke to Fujian FEB today at 10am. Fluent English speaker in Fuzhou FEB.

Eorthisio:

I worked 10 months in Linyi Normal University 3 years ago and I agree, dull industrial city with not much to do or see.

The pros of Linyi are:

-Dirt cheap place to live in.

-Many local girls are cute and not yet entitled bitches like in first tier cities.

-Specialized markets in the city (electronic, housewares, ...) where you can find everything you need.

Cons:

-Ugly city in terms of architecture, almost depressing, the new districts on the Eastern part of the Yi river might be better but they were empty when I was there with very few residents.

-Dusty, heavily polluted place where grey skies are the norm.

-Traffic is a nightmare on the main avenues, on par with Beijing ring roads or Indian cities, especially nearby the People's Square.

-Infrastructure is old, badly conceived, that includes roads and buildings.

-The Yi river is seriously polluted, sometimes it turns yellow, green or even brown, and the people still go fishing there, I would not be surprised if most of the fish served at local restaurants come from it.

pollution drowns out any possible goodness. Dust particles in Iraq MASSIVELY jacked up my lungs, so now I fall into the 'sensitive' classification for the AQI.

Damn, all your offers are pretty good. I get one for 5K RMB only. Is it because I am Chinese American?

Eorthisio:

Yes because people in China look down upon their own kind and worship everything Western including people, Chinese men get mad at us White men for dating Chinese women but deep inside they worship us and everything that we do or make, they drive Western cars, they listen Chinese versions of Western songs because tingbudong Engrish, they want to live like Westerners and so on. In fact they reject their own culture and think that everything Chinese is cheap and backward.

This is a very sad truth, consequence of them having wiped out their own culture during the communist era, there is nothing truly worthy and appealing left in today's Chinese culture.

For real Chinese culture head to Taiwan, Hong Kong or Overseas Chinese communities, now that's places where you will feel authentic China and a deep, thousand of years old culture that is interesting and appealing, all of this does not exist anymore in the Mainland.

It's possible. I know several people from Australia and UK who could only get hired as Teaching Assistants because they were ofChinese descent. Also, it could be the types of jobs that you are looking for. I was offered some jobs at Universities that were around 5K a month.

ChineseAmerican@ If you choose to be an ESL teacher then your pay will be lower than Caucasians because parents believe only Caucasians can speak better English. And because of this, an 18 year old Caucasian kid will be able to make more than you...easily.  No offense meant to all Caucasians here but that's a fact in China. I were you I'd go for subject teaching. The pay beats teaching ESL hands down and you will likely teach lesser hours.

Mateusz:

Well, if you identify as "Chinese American" and play up your "Chineseness" as much as you do on the boards, it could be. If you are American, then be American. When you add the "Chinese" part, they'll assume you're not fully American, or not as much as other Americans, who don't identify with China.

While it could be a white/yellow thing with some schools (they assume white people speak English naturally better than yellow people), and I'm assuming you're yellow (correct me if I'm wrong, since not all Chinese are the same race), if you insist that you're not Chinese, and not going for face jobs, but real jobs, your color doesn't really matter. I've known Americans who had ancestors from China, but insisted on being identified as American, and after the initial "You're yellow, so therefore you should be Chinese, and speak Chinese, or broken English at best" response, they were just treated as any other American.

Problem is that ESL jobs at training centers are more or less face jobs, and they don't care if you're American or Chinese, but what you look like. It's not just race, but age and overall attractiveness also has a factor in hiring and pay. The students want someone "exotic looking" to gawk at, and a white, or even black, face is just more interesting than a yellow one. Honestly, though, you're not missing anything from those jobs.

I'd say go for offer 3, seems like a pretty decent offer, apartment, internet and all. And the hours aren't that many.

Jeez why dont you just take the job you like best and move out of your crappy apartment? That seems to be a big one for you.
Im sure there are nice apartments in nanjing. Meten pays the most. Your 25 hours will be real hours and you can find a new apartment without moving to a poop town. I go to linyi often for work and its balls. I try to never leave the pullman when im there.

Spiderboenz:

Real hours… as opposed to fake hours? METEN pays the best, but also would require me to have my FEC and RP registered in a different city, making me illegal

Real hours as in, your not gonna get 500, 40 min classes. Just 25. If being illegal is such a dealbreaker then why did you list it as one of your options?? P.S. you would probably get more offers if you were just upfront and put " a giant *unt" in your CV. People appreciate the honesty. If not, you could just move back to the states. not sure how you havent figured this out yet, but welfare here isnt great. At least back home the government might spring for a washer for you.

It would be considerably more difficult for me to continue my research in USA. And by difficult, I mean completely impossible.

Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
