Q: Legal consequences of doing a one-time "face job"?

I was approached a few days ago by a friend of a friend about traveling to some smaller city in central China and posing as the marketing director or some such thing for a Chinese company's business meeting in late march. The person said I wouldn't have to say anything and they'd pay me a very high fee for 2-3 days work.

I've heard about these one-off face jobs online and from a few friends but haven't done one myself before. Are they safe? Are the companies who do this ever legitimate or are they all corrupt? What are the legal consequences of potentially "being caught"? What's the likelihood of this happening? What are you're experiences with these jobs?

I haven't answered back yet. Thought I'd ask around here first.

I had a friend who did a job like this once - he was travelling in China (not an expat) and was approached for a 2-3 day job. Essentially, he and a friend were flown up to some jobs expo or such and hung about some company's display pretending they were associated with the company.

They paid him enough money to fund his next six weeks of China travel - helps that he's a tall, blue eyed, blonde haired Scandinavian, I guess.

He had no problems at all, although obviously it was not, strictly speaking, legal. If I were you, I'd arrange some kind of system where you got paid at the time, not after....

Payment up front is a must with this sort of thing.

I wouldn't do it. I believe you know you shouldn't either. That's my honest thought for these sort of things.

I've dne this kind of thing several times without any problem. However, I may have just been lucky. There's absolutely no guarantees available. You take the chance.

I did this once in the past. I was new to China and had no idea about the scam issues here. Though I got some money, I regret I did it,  It is basically about helping scammers rip off innocent people.

On the other hand, you run the risk of getting caught by the police, specially if you happen to have issues with the host.

My advice is you think twice before taking such a job, and in case you want to do it, get your payment up front, also make sure you get all the details of what you are supposed to do there in advance.

Yeah...I ended up passing on this.

I followed up with the person for the details on the job and it sounded super sketchy. Thanks everyone.

usually this things work out, but as this is chinese style, it always comes different as planned, takes longer or whatever, therefore expect to be disappointed a bit. but its easy money... not sure if you can take the ethics though. basically u just help the company to pretend to be international/imported/better/etc and get the deal. considering this deal, which must be quite important, im sure you just get a quite small compensation. even if it reaches 1000rmb per day + transportation/accomodation... thats only a small part of the deal which most likely reaches millions.... they might also take pictures, and you never know what they will do with this photos, especially when they are unhappy with the deal... if you have a reputation to lose and dont really need the money, then i would not go for it.but most people doing these jobs are anyway students and unsuccessful laowai who dont care that much...
