Hello,
I'm an Aussie who's taught in Guangdong for a couple of years. I've decided for July that I'd like to move north for a change of scenery (and type of job change). I've been offered a position with World International English in Zhangjiagang and it looks like an interesting place (and a nice change from living in downtown Guangzhou). However, as it's a smaller city I was just wondering if any foreigners on this site who live there? Is it easy to buy a bus ticket for weekend/weekday travel to Suzhou/Wuxi/Shanghai/Nanjing, etc? Is it a nice and safe place to do outdoor activities (in GZ like many Chinese cities it seems just crossing the road is dangerous, I had a recent accident which involved almost falling down a manhole and having emergency treatment at the local hospital). Are there any social or sports groups? Are there any Chinese language classes for foreigners? I know Malones is one hangout where expats meet. If anyone is in Zhangjiagang, my Wechat is Dtc1977 (e-mail: dclaxton34@gmail.com). I'd love to hear from you (if you currently live or have lived in Zhangjiagang).
I too will be arriving in Zhangjiagang. I get there in August after I finish my vaction and summer camp. I will be at the Liangfeng Senior Middle School. I have lived in Jiangsu Province before. I love this area of China. Wish you the best of luck in your new adventures. There is no train service. But there is bus service that is easy to get around with. And, if you are like me, it looks like a good bike ride for those weekend trips into Wusxi and Suzhou are available.
