Q: Locked into UK Mobile contract. What to do?

Spoke to the provider and I have 12 months left on my 02 contract with Blackberry

I'd really like to use it in China when I go , but the costs will be astronomical.

Anyway I negotiated to have my monthly's reduce to £15/ month as opposed to £25 and I guess I'll leave it in the UK and continue to pay for it until the contract ends.

So what would you suggest- I get a pay-as-you-go in China with a new number- how much do they charge and the cheapest way to call back to the UK?

Only problem is my Blackberry is my business phone, so I am worried about not having access to my UK number whilst in China. I'll be going for an indefinite period of a yr or more and not just some short holday.

Whatever you guys recommend, it'll need to be a long-term solution to this problem.

Cheers all!

There are a few things you can do if you want it, it all will depend on what you need back in UK for your business.  Allow me to explain:

1.- You could leave your Blackberry phone in UK, and get one here to use locally and call UK also.

2.- You could remove the SIM card from your Blackberry, and get in UK a cheap cell phone that accepts the Backberry SIM card and leave the cheap one there (or if no one will answer the phone there when receiving a business call then just do not leave anything), and bring your Blackberry here.  For about 100 Rmb there are many persons that will unlock the phone, then get a local SIM card from one of the three major providers (China Mobile, China Telecom or Chin Unicom) and you will be in business here.  I myself have an account with China Mobile.  I have almost 400 minutes of phone use per month, also a home telephone, and a 4 Mb Internet Broadband connection, and I pay 118 Rmb  per month for it.

3.- As far as overseas long distance calling,  there are two ways of doing this.  You can either buy an International Call Card, or if for example you have a SIM card from China Mobile like me, you can dial overseas by entering 125930 plus country code, area code and phone number for less than one Rmb per minute of chat.  I dislike phone cards because some have too many hidden fees, even if discounted (you can get a nominal 100 Rmb card for less than 50 Rmb) still the per minute charge is higher than advertised.

hi there well you done well to reduce your monthly contract cost, as most companies would not as you entered a contract.  I use china mobile but the best option is to get skype and talk free on a computer and you can also  buy credit to call people in the uk on the phone from your computer for about a 1p a min.
