A friend of mine told me he was on a 30 hour Beijing-Guilin train ride. I thought that was pretty mental considering the longest I've ever done was an 8 hour Beijing-Harbin trip. What about you guys? How did the time? Are they are dire as they sound?

I did a 52 hour journey across the length of India once. Spent most of the time sitting in the doorway of the train drinking cha and watching the world go by. Longest in China's been no more than 20 I think.
8-9 Hours from Hunan to Guangdong. Been on longer bus rides, though. I like trains, since it gives you a chance to meet some pretty genuine people.
16, Hangzhou to Shenzhen. It was an experience, but I told myself I would never do the hard seat again. But the tickets for the sleepers were out when I got there... so 16 long hours back two days later.
Changsha to Guangzhou on the high speed train. It's really not that long time, but have done it with a very upset stomach, so it counts double.
Guangzhou to Suzhou, stated duration 21 hours, actual duration 25 hours. No bed. Hard Seat. That was the worst.
25 hours from Hong Kong to Beijing in 2007. We had a soft sleeper compartment and a fifth of whiskey though so it wasn't too bad.
I did a train ride from Tokyo to Hakone and although I forgot how long it was it was definitely the longest train ride I've been on. I was playing games on my Ipad most of the time and the rest of the time I was on the ride I was viewing the countrysides that we passed on our way to Hakone.

From your previous posts, it was more than a decade ago that you were in Japan? Yet you had an iPad?
Huangzhou to Kunming. don't recall actual # of hours. second-class sleeper, so, wasn't all that bad.
The red eye from Shenyang to Beijing. We got a sleeper and I slept through the whole thing. My wife, her mother, and her aunt didn't enjoy it as much as I did.
The auto train from Virginia to Florida.
Oh God I just nostalgia'd all over my childhood
16 hours , once with hard seats. once with a bed. i'll never do the hard seats again for a trip that long, it was brutal. No problems with the bed though, just slept most the time and played poker with some strangers the rest of the time.
From Nanning to Beijing, not sure how long it took but it was quite a while. We had a sleeper and it was a nice trip. Did not like the smog. Franck3
trans Siberian Railway 1978 Moscow to Irkutsk soft class 2 berth but being a foreigner had the whole berth to myself, good dining car and company

I sure envy you the Trans-Siberian. I researched the hell out of it, but never pulled it off. Never say die though !
side note: I totally dig the train scenes on Dr. Zhivago... Best actors ever? Julie Christie & Omar Sharif vs Clark Gabel & Vivien Leigh.
Shanghai > Shenzhen ... about 19 hours. Hard seat.
I'm going to do Shenzhen > Shenyang this week and it's going to take around 32-34h... I'm getting mentally ready.
Anshan > Tianjin > Nanjing last summer...22h on the hard seat. I returned from Nanjing with bullet train: 4 hours to Tianjin.
In two weeks, I'm heading from Dalian > Beijing to Urumqi, 40h on train, if I counted right????I must get bed!
What worries me the most, I'll run out of Ipod battery on half way.
