I've always been confused by this - should 'mainland' be capitalized when referring to mainland China?
You should only capitalise the proper noun part of a name. As 'mainland' is a descriptor not part of the name of China, then it should not be capitalised.
This would only be the case if 'mainland China' was an officially named region of China and it isn't. i.e. there is no place in China called Mainland China.
It works the same way with points of the compass, they should not be capitalised unless they are part of the name of the place.
e.g. I traveled south and decided to stop in South Carolina.
Oops, sorry, this should have been a comment on nevermind's answer above.
