depends on what kind of friend you want:

are you male or female?

if you are a guy, you probably don't need anyone to hold your hand going to a bar: there will be plenty of 'friends' there once you arrive.

if you are a girl, it may be safer to go with another foreigner if you are new to china.

either way, join a gym or go to a coffee shop. They are good places to meet people who may want to go clubbing/drinking.

Why are you afraid to go alone?

If you want friends, it's your job to find them.

Get out there and do it yourself wink. If you ask other people  to do what you should be doing yourself..... you are only storing up problems for the future because you will owe someone.....

Do it yourself. Don't be in debt to anyone laugh

BrendanE:

And that's what it comes down to, putting yourself out there. When I meet people either they like me or it just wasn't going to work. No big deal if the later happens, afterall there are 22 million of us here and there's always an opportunity to meet someone cool.

There are endless opportunities to make friends here. Meetup is good, Beijing photo walk, the hutong school are just a few options. Interested in a sport? There is a foreign rugby team here and an entire ice hockey league, ole gym provides climbing trips every month in the summer. Couchsurfing has a major presence here and is more used for meeting new friends than actual couchsurfing. The bookworm hosts events on a weekly basis. Check the expat websites like thebeijinger, timeout, cityweekend and smartbeijing for stuff to do. If all else fails just place an ad on thebeijinger looking for a new buddy, sounds lame but it's not, I've met people that way. Just be open, talkative and fearless, you moved here so you're far better at that than the average Joe.

PS: gulou is also a great place to meet people and is way better than wudaokou or sanlitun.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
