Q: Is Malaria a big risk in Yunnan?

Going to Yunnan with friends soon and they are starting to fret about malaria-carrying mosquitos there. They saw a malaria map somewhere and apparently Yunnan is a high-risk zone. They are now contemplating taking anti-malaria meds which will totally whack them out. I've never heard of people catching malaria in Yunnan. Any advice or tips for my over-cautious friends?

Yunnan is listed as a high risk area on this site here:

http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/asia-%28east%29/china/china-...

Med advice can be found here:

http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/advice/malaria.aspx

This is NHS so UK information, but I would imagine most sites will give similar info.

The rural areas are an active malarial zone, but I don't know of any reported cases in the cities (Dali, lijiang<sp?> kunming).   If they're REALLY worried, mosquito nets and heavy mosquito repellent work better as a deterrent.

At least there is only malaria, not dengue fever (untreatable) like in Hainan.
