Well, to get married in HKG, you must make an appointment first, wait at least two weeks, and then on the day given, go to office and get married.  Hope you know that small detail.  In China, if you have all required documents, no need to make appointment.

Another thing, there is no marriage visa for China. You enter China under your visa, then with marriage certificate from where ever go got hitched, and other documents like passport, Hukou book, ID card of wife, etc. go to PSB of city where your wife is registered, and apply for a temporary residence permit for the reason of marriage to a Chinese National.

Once you have it, your visa is no longer valid, and the permit now functions as a visa.

Scandinavian:

just to add, the permit functions as a one year, multi entry visa. (provided validity of passport is more than one year from time of issue)

FYI, I'm speaking only for Shenzhen, my mate has got this too, but was required to have 60,000 RMB in his wife's bank account to show support, the first visa is 3 months, 3 months again, next 6 months to a year and usually 1year to 5 years is possible. But but but but, there is a catch, when you have a residence permit like this one you can only go to Hong Kong Twice.

In Shenzhen, Futian district, I and my wife had to make an appointment to get married in China, there will be one more form for you to fill out. It might be different in different provinces. I'm sure not all permits will be multi entry.

If your wife can support you great, if you're rich great, if neither, you should come back on a Z visa and work legally for your wifes sake. Sorry if I'm speculating, I'm married to a Chinese too, and having the Working permit makes our marriage heavenly.

Createach:

Nice to know all that,,,,,,,,appreciate the advide right there and probably i need a beer now and some deep thinkong about all this seriously,

Good choice man, a Z visa will allow you feel the happiness of your marriage, the marriage permit will only allow you to look over your shoulder. The beers on me.

It doesn't matter if you get married inside or outside China for the visa/resident permit's sake.  However, if you do get married outside China you'll have to get the marriage certificate notarized by the State Department and then the Chinese embassy in your home country.  Its not that hard but it does take some time and you'll have to request an original copy of the marriage certificate before you can undergo that process.

So you met someone six months ago and now you're thinking of getting married and leaving the country. Is this something she wants? Cause I think she's marrying you to get out of the country. She'll go to the bathroom and give you the slip 10 minutes after you land.

Go for a 2 year engagement minimum, you aren't going to see the worst side of anyone in six months.
