11 years 34 weeks ago in Visa & Legalities - China
You can marry one or twenty, makes no difference, you will not get a permanent residence visa unless you do make a substantial investment in the Chinese economy. And last I heard was in the 3 to 5 million US dollar bracket.
If you are married to a local, all you get is a temporary residence permit, it starts at 6 months, can go as high as 5 years, but normally stays around one or two years. That will allow you to live in China continuously while it is valid, and if wise and got multiple entries then will also work as a visa allowing you to exit and enter China.
In theory, after 5 years of marriage and living in China for at least 9 months of every one of them 5 years, while paying tax as well for them 5 years, you can apply for permanent visa, but dont know one person who has actually been given one
Pretty much as paulmartin said. There is a system (I heard 10 years not 5 but hey i'm not counting) but it appears to be one of those rules the Chinese have that no-one can utilise. Unless of course you have substantial guanxi.
