Q: Is the May 1 holiday too early to visit Chang Bai Shan?

I am considering traveling to Chang Bai Shan for a few days around the May 1 holiday. I know this area is very cold most of the year so I am wondering if the May 1 holiday is too early to visit there. Any suggestions? Also, if anyone has been there before any advice on places to stay, see and eat would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I went there during the Autumn season and it was good but a bit chilly. I would say May is a good time to visit... it shouldn't be too hot or too cold.

There is a small township near the mountain and you should certainly find a small hole in the wall place and try the lamb (with some buddies and beer). There are tons of North Korean merchandise for sale (which could impress your friends if you tell them you got in to North Korea lol) and some strange ginger bai jiu that actually tastes pretty decent.

There are special drivers to take you up and down the mountain. They do it all day and I think it bores the hell out of them... so they drive crazy as a means of self-entertainment and to scare the shit of the of the tourists. Expect this in advance!

Thanks for the advice Rob. I'm just hoping we get some clear days and not rain. I'll be on the lookout for the lamb place you mentioned!

There is no such thing as "Too cold" there is wrong clothing and weak humans ! Get your mittens on and get going !

The current conditions is just around freezing. Shouldn't be a problem, your beers will stay drinkable longer that way !
