Q: is the media trying to get people to hurt themselves?

perhaps it's because my understanding of Chinese is limited, that i don't hear the warnings. in this copy-culture, abundant warnings seem of vital importance, unless these talent-slash-variety shows are a form of subliminal population reduction. they need warnings like:
"this person is a trained, double-jointed contortionist. emulating her puts you at severe risk of contracting spinal injuries."
"throwing knives can kill your target."
"underaged children dressed in skintight costumes performing sexually suggestive dance routines will attract dangerous unwanted attention."
"the baijiu bottle was actually filled with water. drinking a whole bottle of spirits is unhealthy, and can be fatal."
"crying in front of authority figures is not a fullproof strategy to deal with all of life's challenges."
"the human head is not designed to carry the weight of your body, especially if you are not as thin as this performer."
"a fall from such heights can cause lethal injury."
and just to be safe: "this magician did not actually cut a person in half. don't try this at home."

what is it with the level of entertainment here? i know it's not intellectual, but does it all have to be so dangerously life-threatening? is this an expression of people's schadenfreude cruel streak, maybe the result of limited imagination, or some remnant of the Cultural Revolution's starving farmer mentality? it's almost as savage as watching gladiatorial games.

I'd attribute it almost entirely to a quest for ratings. The public be damned, sod the proles mentality.

I think that they just report the "news" as is and leave it free of commentary unless it serves some form of propaganda purpose ('Don't use Microsoft products as the evil Americans can spy on you...use only domestic, back-door filled, software so Grandpa Xi can protect you.').

Not unlike our own nanny-states who need to warn the masses of such here-to-fore unknown dangers such as, 'Don't wear your coffee, it's hot! Don't eat the plastic egg that contains a rattling prize in your Kinder Egg! Looking directly at your laser pointer is a big no-no!', etc.

I'm more interested in whether China will turn from a compensation-driven society to a litigious one.

coineineagh:

appearances, family obligations and mob rule are the more constant, absolute laws of the land. the way the legal system is designed and implemented haphazardly, i don't think corrupt court verdicts would serve anything more than to emphasize the influence of the prosecutor.

Well, as far as swallowing small toys goes, kids get enough practice by learning not to swallow the fish bones! Nobody cares about eye health because their eyes are gonna go to crap in a few years anyway from all of the late night cramming. The roads are one of the biggest reflections of poor awareness of safety if you ask me.

Crossing the road is always a hazard here and I've seen so many people almost get hit by a flying car, that I still can't come to terms as to how to make sense of why they seem to place no value on their life. Literally nobody looks both ways when crossing.

A Chinese man told me he even hit an elderly woman when he was merely inching forward in his car at a snail's pace. I guess the lady was way too slow and he was trying to make her maintain the pace. Ridiculously, his side mirror ended up bumping her slightly, and she tumbled forward and broke a hip. It's funny and sad at the same time.... Things don't ever repair when you get that old, and the old lady shouldn't be putting her safety into others' lives, and even worse, shouldn't think a monetary compensation will help her old bones heal back to the way they were. It seems Chinese all think "nobody dares to hit ME!" therefore they never take caution to anything.

I saw quite a few Chinese documentaries explaining how X or Y can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. They don't just mention it, they give the science behind in a simplified way, and they give a live demonstration. For example, using metallic objects in a micro-wave, leaving a water boiler on with very little water, etc. I think it's a nice, well-intended effort, that would deserve more funding and time.

it's good to know they at least try. Documentaries? So, these safety warnings are the Chinese equivalent of Horizon?

I saw that sketch on tv where the guy down a bottle in one go.  Interesting.  I enjoyed the train sketch that followed.

Health and safety. Ha ha.  I have been enjoying the empty roads so I go for a scoot on the e-bike in the evening. I might trundle around for an hour and only see a half dozen cars.... and yup.... I still get cut up.

The other night I saw two cars on the same bit of road, a three lane highway. First time in a few evenings I have seen two cars together . And yeah, one just came straight out onto the three lane road, straddled 3 lanes and caused the other car already on the highway to stop.

WTF I thought. What is it with not being able to wait for 3 seconds?   I just don't get it. A driver approaches a main highway, only one car is on the highway and it is progressing at speed. What to do? Wait or just drive straight out, then see the other car, panic and STOP !!!!  WTF !

Today, I was on my ebike. Not another moving vehicle to be seen, apart from a Porche Ceyenne thingie. Cuts right in front of me to park, then as I pass him he pulls out because he decides he does not want to park there.

Lol. I have been here too long: because not once did I get angry or wave my fist. I just beeped my little tin beeper and stared ahead with my bored look.

It is an interesting point about the lack of "don't do this at home" warnings.  Lots of people in the west criticise the health and safety "brigade". But after staying here for a while you come to appreciate the work they do.

Fire safety is my big thing. I am always try to spot the fire escapes wherever I am. I also look to see if there is access for fire fighters.  And the funniest thing I saw today, the local fire station has it's front entrance blocked with building rubble. Ok, the fire engines use an exit at the back, but hey, come on. If the sentry at the front of the fire station sits back and watches the entrance filled with rubble what chance does anyone else have?

Sorry, I am a bit bored so I ranted wink

And during that sketch, the hostess let out a deep "Wah!" to express her surprise.  Clearly the guy was really drinking baiju!

I was watching a sketch set in a street in front of a parked car.  I think it was an anti drink drive and be friends message.  Same one?

Hey, you copied *verbatim* my own post ?! It's just a post on a website, in the big picture of all things in the world, it's nothing... But that's not very nice and gratuitous :p
