So...I had my medical done here for my visa. Originally I had done something identical in the States, but they refused the document, giving me nebulous explanations as to why.
Just got me thinking. Is this just a moneymaking tool (600 yuan a pop) or are they really looking for something in particular when they test us?

They are looking for debilitating chronic diseases... TB, HIV ect ect....
The reasoning is no different from any other countries immigration policies... they dont want to have to waste recources on non nationals.
They want you on record here in China. You got your visa and they need medical information to fill out your file. Like Laolee mentioned they want to screen for any big disease but also it is needed for legal reasons for your employer.
If you are working for a Chinese employer it is a must if you have one. They are not going to accept one from your home country because they have no way to verify it or use it in there Chinese language database system for all foreigners legally working in China.
it's a scam... Chinese go to our countries need 1 exam, proof of job or income, 1 address to give when they arrive of where they're staying and that's it. Here it's an endless gong show, every year, jacking around with the police registering our every move... it's a joke.
