Q: Men who come to China and date/marry girls they cant communicate with properly - is it OK?

Do they help give foreigners a bad rep amongst the locals.

Note: by properly I mean they can barely hold a conversation beyond simple sentences about simple subjects.

I think there is a small minority that fall into this category how ever they most likely don't stay long as they can't communicate well enough to survive on their own in China

and the locals just laugh at them and take them for as much as they can while there.

as for the smart ass answer

Who can really understand women in general?

(little lone Chinese women)

Is that what your wumao training taught you?  That we are all desperate fuckers looking for the sure thing?

Ya that's it...the first girl that dug me in China couldn't speak English....NOT....moron.

Is that not a two-way street?

Why would a woman who cannot speak English want to be with a man she can't talk to?

Oh yeah, cause she wants to take him for all his savings, visa and ticket out of China. But THAT'S "OK" with you I'm sure.

Snowball, I feel for some of the answers that you have received.

You are asking a valid psychological question and it begs a good answer.  My own experience has been that the unilingual foreign men that I have met that have married mostly unilingual Chinese women have come here because they have been often-married-and-divorced at home (most that I have met have been married more than 3 - 4 times); they are usually not the kind sought after by Western women (drinking problems, fidelity problems, evident mental instability) or they are at the end of their lifespan (many of them are 60+ years) and this is their last try at something.  They know that Chinese women often quite relish the idea of a home overseas and this is the card that they play, so to speak.  For the Chinese lady, I would venture to say that it is a marriage of convenience; for the Western man, an act of desperation, at least in the cases that I mention.

snowballeffect:

No worries, I'm used to it, its liking talking to a brick wall in this place, some people will never see sense. It was mainly Crimochinas question about chinese people thinking foreign men are perverts that prompted this.....are these kind of relationships part of the reason why they would think that?

It probably is not going to last.

There would be a huge dependency on technology to help communicate.

Somebody has to be willing to learn the other's language.

But then it becomes the role of not just a partner, but also a teacher. Problematic.

You are very crafty, Snowflake. You openly show your contempt for foreigners, but subtly show your contempt for the Chinese at the same time.

You were obviously trying to state that Chinese women are somehow less capable of making decisions than foreign men.

snowballeffect:

No, traveler I asked a question about foreigners coming to China and dating women who can barely speak their language, what part of the question didnt you understand? I've no thoughts whatsoever on the girls side of this phenomenon. Get back researching on Wiki.

By the way, you need to work on your use of the preposition (often missing), and you also need to use punctuation in contractions. These are dead giveaways that you are not a native speaker.

att no balls: most of the women i dated in china did not speak english to where i need to use a translator. (my current gf also) most were good women that did not ask for anything. they either wanted a physical relationship, companionship , or love. most had to break up with me because of their family. others , we were not suitable for other reasons. (normal human relationships)

it is funny how you can't accept the fact that women are half the decision when it comes to dating. that idea seems to be foreign to you. as if women do not have the right to decide. you are exposed, you are clearly chinese.

I have known 3 couples where neither spoke the others language when they started dating.  Each time, they communicated by a combination of translation devices (dictionaries, google, etc...)  And each time it was the non-English speaker who eventually learned English so they could communicate better.

Couple 1: He was in his mid-50s, she was in her mid-30's.  He had been married about 3 times before and she was married once before.  The guy, in my opinion was a loser and a bit of a nut case.  The only job he could get when they got back to the US(even though he held a Ph.D., in religious study) was as a security guard.

She tried really hard to put up with this guy and stayed with him for almost 10 years before she threw him out.

Couple 2: He was 30, she was 24.  Neither was married before, both had a decent education and job.  He was just incapable/unwilling to learn any language at all.  So she taught herself English eventually.  Actually, she learned really quickly, I was very impressed.

In any case, even though they didn't communicate verbally much, they were always happy together.  And as of last month, they are still together after 5 years.

Couple 3:  He was 24, she was 36.  He was never married, she was a widow.  She latched onto him hard from day 1.  She moved in with him after their 3rd date.  Eventually, she took him for everything he was worth, slept with all his friends, and kicked him out of his own apartment.  The guy left China never to return.

The point is that the results are on a case by case basis.  Language helps a married couple communicate, but it isn't really a sign that the relationship will last.

Do I think it is ok?  Sure, why not.  I would not even give it much thought.

Goodness knows that I have seen plenty of couples who were of the same race and could communicate without problem where I just shook my head in disbelief that one was with the other.

诸葛亮:

You know... come to think of it, I'd suggest that all foreigners avoid girls who latch on to them from the beginning. They're either desperate, nutjobs, or have ulterior motives and will do anything to achieve their goals.

I speak from experience. The last one was a nutjob, and she wouldn't stop latching onto me.

I dated a girl who couldn't speak a word of English. We did use translation, etc, and I did learn some Chinese with her (she refused to learn English), but the relationship didn't last because she was a nutjob.

The last one is my wife. Sometimes we need to use translation because she doesn't understand certain concepts, idioms, etc. She often doesn't feel too comfortable speaking English, so she defaults to Chinese quite often. I often explain English concepts to her using Chinese, and that helps.

We do have a lot of communication issues, I'm not going to lie. We have misunderstandings, etc. But we love each other, and we truly understand one another. It's just the communication sometimes has quirks. We both teach each other our native languages, so that helps. She speaks 2000+ English words, so it's not as bad as it sounds.

My Chinese is at a point now where I can roughly explain what I'm trying to say. Her English has improved IMMENSELY, and so has my understanding of her mispronunciation.

And as GuilinRaf said... as long as they love each other, who cares? Some people are deaf, some people are mute, etc. Not everyone is perfect. Deaf people might have a difficult time communicating with their siginificant other if they aren't able to use sign language. Should those people only stick to their own "kind"?

Xpat.John:

Funnily enough, I had a deaf friend come to China once (I don't speak sign, but he could read lips and could talk in English if you had the patience to decipher what he was trying to say).  Through my Wife's network of friends we found a deaf girl around his age to introduce him to.

We invited them to a dinner party where they could meet and get to know each other.  (She was really cute.) Anyway, they were both very excited to meet each other and began signing to each other immediately.  Then they both sighed and began laughing.

That is when we all learned (including our deaf friends) that Chinese and American sign language is actually 2 different languages.

In any case, they ended up dating for a few weeks until her parents found out that she was dating a foreigner and forced her to stop seeing each him.

I met one of those guys who could actually speak perfectly, he's a classmate at my school here (well, before he disappeared). He just had trouble understanding non-native speakers since their lips never moved correctly, and most of them didn't pronounce the words correctly anyway.

It's screwed up that her parents broke them up though. That is sad.

Sure it's ok, just really really weird, that's all. But then i've known a few couples who've been quite happy with their relationships even though they could hardly understand a word each other was saying. But look on the bright side, at least the bloke doesn't have to listen to his wife's incessant nagging all the time, I mean morning, noon and night, just on and on and on, like a broken record, for God's sake, I mean, why won't she just give me some peace and shut the f**k up!?

I think that communication is such a big problem for these couples that they would need to have a pretty relaxed relationship. It would be more of a "friends with benefits" thing than true dating, although they could call it whatever they wanted.

The other day I was at a bar and sitting with some foreign friends. One of them is a guy who is ugly as sin. This extremely beautiful Chinese girl came in and I could tell she was his ex-gf and she started arguing with him right there in the bar in her broken English. It made me sick to think that this ugly guy (who is also terribly stupid and obnoxious) could date such a beautiful girl. At the same time I didn't want to get involved in her banal arguments and attempts to win him back, when it was obvious he didn't care for her. That's when I left.

Even if you can communicate, couples need to be open minded and really most Chinese girls have a very strict view of what they want from a relationship and don't even understand the concept of "open minded".

诸葛亮:

And yet, despite the fact that they couldn't communicate all that well, she still cared about him enough to try and get back together with him.

So what if he's ugly? I've met a lot of ugly people in the world with BEAUTIFUL HEARTS. That goes for both men and women. Plenty of people can look past that.

my wife and I get along well .....  she diligently tries to learn English ...basics are and were before I met her pretty good ........  I do very basic Chinese and only off and on make attempts to learn more  ... I'm 56, she's 46 .......in my year here, I only recall one incident that we couldn't communicate well ...... I accidently locked her out and slept through her door knocking....   ..  she spent the night in the hall, phoning turned off phones ....  she was angry, but said little the next day, because she knew I wouldn't understand and would just smile and laugh as she gave me extreme shit in Chinese... glad I couldn't understand that day ...oops.

Guilty,I can't speak Chinese. I used a phone translator. It doesn't translate English to Chinese very well. I've made big jokes using to voice recognition. I say something and the translator says something completely wrong in English and just plain weird so I translate it. I ask where is the milk and the translator will say the monkey is blue in English.

The biggest problem I have using a translator is the Chinese will write on their phone and show it to me in Chinese. I guess because I show them Chinese. I explain that I can not read Chinese and give them my phone number and ask them to send me a text message and I will translate it. After I say or ask something else, I must repeat this process over and over. It's like they can't remember that I can't read Chinese for one minute.

I can't see my not speaking English as giving foreigners a bad rep. The Chinese I deal with seem to like me.  And they know I'm a foreigner, I stick out, so why would the Chinese think I speak Chinese. It's very frustrating trying to communicate when two people do not share a common language. My girl friend speaks English, but she shares a common problem I run into. She doesn't listen or answer. Simple things like ''wait'' end up being an argument.
