post an example of your work and a example of what he wants ....but don't tell us which is which.

Has he given you any feedback on how he'd like you to write email or just criticized you? Constructive feedback is good. Plain old criticism is poor management 

i hate micro managing bosses/people.  but some people like to be micro managed. i guess they enjoy the constant hen pecking.

It sounds to me like he may be feeling threatened by you, or maybe he's just the type who thinks it should be done his way.

If I were you, and wanted to get on with him I would say something like this is how you've always interacted with clients and friends in the past because that was the expected norm, but you value his experience and advice and would really appreciate seeing a few sample letters in order to provide the best service possible.
Then just do what he does if that's the way they want it done.

As you've figured out - it depends on the customer!

I've had to train people (here) as to how to respond to non-Chinese people. Because, the style is VERY different. I also imagine that this other boss would think it's perfectly ok to over-promise and under-deliver. That's a HUGE no-no!! (my ex-student got her 100K RMB customer back because of the advice I gave her... ie, we don't care about your face! Just be straight with him)

There's a company I was going to partner with, and the boss was trying to tell his marketing people to 'think like a foreigner'. How do you do that if you don't actually know any or interact with them???

But...he's the manager! He knows us foreigners FAR better than we, ourselves, know...
