Q: Midwives in China?

Since the medical system is so f'd up in more ways than I can count, my wife and I have been researching the possibility of enlisting the services of a midwife to assist with the birth of our baby early next year. We know it's a touchy subject here (what isn't?) but nevertheless we are very determined to find a more humane way to have this baby, if you know what I mean.

Any advice or input?

To be honest

if you can go back to Canada for the birth you will be better off in the aspect you have though's better support networks leading up too , During and after the birth

we were in a similar position 5 years ago with our son however we were able to get to Australia just in time (visa thing)

congratulations Daddy to be

hire midwife??? ... then u plan to ask ur wife deliver baby at home with the midwife???

u should be crazy!.. have u thought about the complications that can pop up at the last moment?

my wife is a gynecologist herself (fresh from uni), but she had very good connection in the best hospital here as she was trained there 1 year... so the best doctor specially came from home at the time of delivery..

delivery was predicted normal... position etc.. but somewhere at the last moment baby's heart beat slowed down and stopped... the chord got pressed... since the best doctor was available she could manage to take out the baby asap and heart beat restored...

as per my wife.. its just one of the many complications that can happen... do u want to risk ur baby's wife's life?

derek:

I do believe I said we were "researching" the possibilities. I don't need to explain myself to you and quite frankly I wasn't impressed with the tone of your response.

I am aware of the seriousness of this procedure.........having said that...........chances are we will be in Canada before Christmas. Phil's advice was well taken.

By the way, how do they choose the "best doctor" here anyways?

Hi Derek, I delivered a very healthy baby in china and I was assisted by an American midwife. I was even able to deliver in the water! Everybody I met before her told me I would have had to have a c-section cause my baby's head was too big, the chord and other stuff like that. I met her and I had the birth I wanted. She is a great professional. She works in china at the moment, where do you live? You can message me in private if you wish, I'd be happy to help!
Chiara.

derek:

I just messaged you and thanks a lot!

Hi Derek,

Mid-wifing is an interesting option.  I wish you well with your research.

I don't know what city you are living in, but if it is a tier 1 city there should be some really good hospitals that might make nice alternatives.  My wife had her babies at a hospital that specialized in baby births.

Each room had a private nurse 24/7 and if natural child birth was used they do it right in the woman's private room.  The baby is also placed in the same room as the mother and not in a nursery down the hall as is common in most places.

Each private room also had a second bed that a guest could use so the woman can have company with her 24/7.  The nurses also take great care showing the mother how to care for her newborn child.

This hospital was in Guangzhou, but I am sure they exist in other major cities as well.

Either way, I wish you and your wife all the best with your new child.

derek:

I suspect that was an expensive proposition?

Thanks for the support as well. It's nice to hear stuff other than the horror stories I have been hearing from the relatives.

If I remember right, for the 1 week stay it was about 20k RMB, but in my opinion it was well worth the price.  This place was used by a lot of expats, their lobby was covered with photos of expats and their newborn children.

Hi Derek,China has a huge population as your well aware. They are very used too child birth even in tiny hospitals.I had a son second child 6 weeks ago in an average size hospital in Xian, very good care and attention taken by all the staff on the ward, hospitals are a safer choice than homebirths in my opinion.Just enjoy the moment and look on the bright side, plus many congrats too you and your family.PS only cost 9000 rmb with private room and 9 day stay

I totally understand your feelings and predicament, Derek.  I had our first baby here (Shanghai) then after moving to Beijing had two home births.  I wanted a calm and simple birth, which they really cannot do in these hospitals.  Every thing they do in the hospital environment is disruptive to the birth process.  They basically have no idea of the true needs of a birthing woman.  So, I made my own environment (with careful consideration of my risk profile, and being close to a hospital and knowledgeable about certain conditions that might lead me quickly there!)  My home births.  Wow.  Easy, calm, It was wonderful, both times.  More recently, I know friends have hired Australian midwives.  I also keep a document, current and updated I call BIRTH OPTIONS.  You can see it if you join Beijing Mamas Yahoo Group  groups.yahoo.com/group/Beijing_Mamas in the Files section.  I am afraid I will miss an email so just text me your email and I'll send it.  My phone number is 139 1030 6022 and also glad to talk to you about the issues.  I have doula and midwife contacts all over China, know of a birthing center in Bali, a couple Waterbirthing hospitals and stuff in China, too.  Feel free to join BJ mamas or be in touch.  best, Liora in Beijing.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
