Q: Is Mo Yan the best contemporary Chinese writer?

I'm looking to delve into the culture through pieces of fiction, and I was wondering which Chinese writers you've read, who you think give a neutral, non-politically motivated take on life in China (through their characters)

I've heard Red Sorghum, by Mo Yan, was a must read.

Mo Yan is good, but they are like some former prestigious writers.

I don't think any real good Chinese writers take any political side in their book, nor they really know much about politics. They are more good at emotion side imho.

Another former prestigious writter i used to like is Zhang Xian Liang, but this guy changed to a business man (remembered). He writtes lot of books about young men during that special years of China. and Gu Yue..Sheng Chong Wen....same too.

I don't really read any Chinese books for some years now. Can't recomment other good writters from the contempory China, maybe there are not much of them now . I got a feel Chinese literature is dying.

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...

Subjective! You can't really rate things like that. People rave about Tolstoy, but I found him dry and rather simple, but I love Papillion, by Henri Charrierire, which is written at the level of a 5 year old. So.... yeah....
