Q: Mooncakes are way too sweet.

In the past, one of the most common statements I have heard Chinese make towards western "snacks" or "candies" (anything from chocolate to oreos) has been "too sweet!"  Literally those two words.  Whenever my girlfriend made that comment, I took it as a sign that I could eat to my heart's desire!  That usually meant I got to eat extra ice cream.  At that time, I also hated mooncakes, wondering "how is this a snack?"

Last year I realized I like mooncakes but couldn't handle that much.  Flash forward to this year, and it's even worse. I tried one and I literally could only handle a small bite of the egg yellow one!  To my surprise, the sweetness grossly overpowered the saltiness.

Why do Chinese enjoy mooncakes that are filled with that disgustingly sweet paste? I thought they don't like sweet things?  And these treats taste 100 times more sweeter than other types of snacks!  As an American, the sweetness completely overloaded my pallette.

That's a great one!  If I hear a Chinese say that to me then I'll be sure to use this line.

Oreo cookies had to reinvent their cookie for China, they are less sweet. Mooncakes are like Xmas fruit cake, your not supposed to eat them, just re-gift them.

@Spiderboens. I wholeheartedly agree that meat belongs nowhere near pastries/cake etc. However, these meat mooncakes they have in the Shanghai region, they are pretty awesome. Just don't call them cakes.
