Q: Most inappropriate use of a western song you've heard here?
I was at a Chinese wedding a while back where the bride walked down the aisle to Love The Way You Lie...a duet by Rihanna and Eminem about domestic abuse. Good song. Very awkward.

This is hilarious! I cracked up when I read this. I know this too. Drove me insane listening to 'Its a small world after all' as the water truck would go up and down the bloody road outside our school every single morning for about an hour, to keep the roads clean from all the sky-rise construction going on here.
In Luoyang, I seemed to hear Christmas carols in June everywhere I went. Then again, Christmas is in summer in Australia.
A few years back a bunch of 7-8 years old girls did a performance at our school where they sang and danced to a song called 'Sexy music'. Very suggestive song and their nutso teacher taught them suggestive dances to match. The entire audience sat there like WTFFFFF is this????!

They played 'Amazing grace" in a TV commercial, completely out of place.
Our dorm backyard gate plays "To Alice" every morning around 6 a.m. when they open it.
I've heard DMX - Ruff Ryders Anthem, Tupac - California Love, Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy and a number of other nineties gansta rap classics playing outside hair salons in Beijing. Still no Wu-Tang sadly.
I was at a friends wedding last year and, in amongst all the usual mushy-gooey songs, they played "Come on Eileen". I couldn't control myself and burst out laughing, which may have gone undetected if I wasn't walking up to the stage to give a speech!

Come on Eileen at a wedding? That's not inappropriate at all, in fact I think it's quite brilliant (if it was knowingly planned). Do you know the meaning of the song? It almost perfectly matches what I imagine the typical Chinese groom is thinking.

The weirdest thing I've heard in China music wise was in a Haerbin nightclub. A disco remix version of "When a Child is Born" by Johnny Mathis. Weird in the sense that it takes the Chinese to turn a song that by nature should be relaxed and serene and turn it into something that is loud and high tempo.
They used to play La Primavera, the movement depicting Spring in the Four Seasons by Vivaldi to help everyone greet another day's study when I was in college in Guilin. Not really a poor choice, but something of that inspiration was lost from the piece as it was always accompanied by the smell of 1000 early morning bowel movements wafting through the halls of residence.
Oppa gangnam style played at a kindergarten....if they are trying to control the students why would they want to play a song that will make them go wild? I don't get it it was the most inappropriate use of a song even if it wasn't western.....and the lyrics of the song weren't meant for kids I'll tell you that it was meant for adults although nobody here understand what the lyrics are!
One of my friends dances in a club. She invited me to Xiamen to see her dance once and she chose "Ain't no Sunshine". Initially, I thought it was a seriously poor choice. It's a sad blues/R&B song. But when I saw the execution, I gave her a thumbs up. She really was creative with it. Best pole dance I ever saw. But I don't think anyone else could pull that off.

I was somewhat surprised to suddenly hear the speakers blaring out

Was in TGI Fridays a few years back in Beijing. Children's birthday party, lots of kids everywhere, including a lot of English speaking ones. And I mean little kids. Over the loudspeaker was an absolutely filthy rap number where every other word was an expletive, and the gist of the song was about how the singer raped women and shot cops "just because." I was horrified and wrote to the company--turned out their regular music had died, so they sent out some poor waitress who didn't know a word of English to buy some "English music." She just ran to the nearest pirated CD shop and picked up the first thing that seemed to be in English. None of the staff had any idea what was being said, and they were horrified too.
was in a black taxi and heard a hardcore gangster rap song talking about nothing raping women and banging them up the ass. it was a CD the guy was listening to. No idea how he came across that CD, why he was listening to it, or what he thought it meant. It was funny enough though that I took a video while in the taxi
Real American (Hulk Hogan theme song) by a lame cop drama. The cop was trying to catch the bad guy and had to train Rocky-style to beat him and so they blared the music to go with the training montage.
