Well if you are going to bring one.... make sure it is a quad band.  And unless you trust some Chinese guy to hack it for you, make sure it's unlocked as well.  That's kinda the problem with US phones they are programmed to only work for a single company and you have to either pay more to not have that programing or pay someone to hack it for you.

If you buy one here, just assume it's a fake.

what do you mean fake, if i buy one from chinese cell provider, how can it work if it's fake

When I first came to China I went to a China Mobile dealer.  Only problem is they could not figure out to change the operating language to English on any of the good phones, so I had to settle for a cheap one that was easy to change languages on.
You would be better off buying an unlocked phone stateside before coming here for many reasons (if you can even find a real Iphone here it will cost you much more than in the states), one of which being the phones are more expensive in China (the good ones).
If you are flying through Hong Kong before entering China, then I would suggest you buy an unlocked phone there as they are cheaper.
I just bought an unlocked Iphone on my last trip home...I just swap sim cards now...works great.  Pay as you go plans in China are dirt cheap, but I would suggest bringing a local with you to get set up if you don't speak any Chinese.

If you are in USA, you know well that iPhones 4, for example,  can use a single SIM card and you can not open the back to replace / remove the battery.
Go to China UNICOM here, sign for a plan for 3 years at 188 Rmb per month, and get an iPhone 4 with places to install 2 SIM cards and you can open the back and remove the battery.

It looks exactly like an iPhone (Apple) 4, works like one, feels like one, but it ain't "original", and actual cost is in the $ 300 to $ 400 US dollar range (wholesale).  That we do call a "FAKE"

Get one from here once you've arrived. Most celphones from other countries won't read Chinese characters.yes

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
