There was a two piece band in Sanya who I really liked, one of them was called Brendan and he owned a surfing school there - the other guy worked for a hotel chain as a manger or someit. No idea what they were called though!! They played in some expat bar by the river.....

Ring a bell with anyone else?

No idea but I did hear a really wild band in Guilin a few years back. It was just a guy on the drums and some girl on guitar. Really tight, alternative and avante garde, until the woman started singing like Yoko Ono and then I just wanted to throw stuff at her.

Sounds like The Ting Tings!

Except for the Yoko vocals part ...

Hands down bar none that would be T.A.S. (Terrace All-Stars).

Shenzhen, Shekou Marine World @ The Terrace. They are amazing.  If fact they are even better than the Filipino rock cover bands in Hong Kong and that's saying allot.  They can do almost any song you can imagine.

The band leader is Canadian (and has been in China for 20 years and even sings some Chinese pop songs for the mixed crowd) and most of the rest of the band are Filipino.

I go twice a month and would go more if it was closer to me.

It seems like the 2nd and 3rd tier cities suffer from live band deficiency. There are loads of decent bands in Beijing either completely composed of expats or with one or two expat members. The Amazing Insurance Salesman, Pet Conspiracy, Beijing Beatles all spring to mind but there are a few more decent ones who's name I can't remember.

I'm a big fan of Feichang Fresh, in a completely non-ironic way:

TeddybeerZ!! The band I used to play in!

In retrospect, we sucked, but we did have the "I give not a single fuck" attitude.

In all seriousness, there was that one band that played back when I was in high-school and we did battles of the bands and stuff like that, who was called "Maggie Who". Those guys were good.

There also was this one guy who apparently just went from bar to bar around Beijing playing covers by himself, but I never got his name. That guy was amazing, and supposedly had his own album.

Other than that, I've seen a bunch of other expat band, but there was nothing too special.

(TeedybeerZ was da shit, yo!)

bill8899:

Yea but in my opinion that's how you improve. I'm talking about the "get on stage and DO SOMETHING" approach.

Props to you for going onstage. I know one or two guitar players with mad skills, but they won't go onstage.

What genre do you play? I'm mostly punk and rock. I don't play acoustics well. It's not that I have an attitude against acoustic, it's just that it seems like a completely different instrument compared to an electric (dianjita!).

Anyway ... have a GCD.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
