Q: My Chinese friend wants to teach Foreigners Chinese in Shanghai (There abouts) How to do it?

My Co-worker wants to make a little extra money besides the main job she has now.

I would recommend some foreigners for her to teach but the ones i know in DongYang 东阳 are few and far between. besides the ones i do know here have no interest in learning Chinese what-so-ever anyway.

I suggested for her to first just travel to shanghai and have a look and she what she can find but obviously that comes with a few risks too.

My question is just, how can she get her name out there? What kinds of steps should she take to find students to teach?

Her English is good and i think she would have no trouble getting into it, but the main problem is she just can't find anyone.

Thoughts?

Do you guys have any experience with this kind of thing?

Thanks in advance.

Just because she can speak Chinese, doesn't mean she can teach it. It is the reverse of unqualified English speakers trying to teach English.

For a serious answer, she needs to approach it from a marketing perspective.  Where are her clients?  How can she reach them?  What can she say/do that makes her better than the large number of other teachers?  How can she relay that message? Etc...

Marketing yourself to find clients is very difficult, requires a lot of networking and takes a lot of time to find a steady client base.

One starting point may be the local events held by various Chambers of Commerce.  They might be a little expensive to attend, but there she will find a large number of business minded foreigners who are in the mood and place for others to walk up and talk to them about what services they can provide.
