Q: My first post here, a BCD...
Well, I have been visiting and reading this website for a few years now, but never posted anything. I was content just reading what others wrote, and was very entertained! Everything from TheDude's "relationship" issues to the Hulk's experiences with his family. But today I had a terrible day and every person I complained to simply said, "This is China..." If I hear that one more time, I will lose might kill somebody. This being China is not an excuse for some things that go on here. I have been here for three years and experienced a lot of crazy things, but relying on the excuse "this is China" is a cop out for Chinese people. Don't get me wrong, I love my job and life here, but sometimes I, like all people, need to vent. Unfortunately for you people, I will vent here.
So my day was going fine yesterday, good classes, love the university, good students, the works. I got home around 3:30 to walk my dog. I live in Daqing and it has been snowing non stop for three days, so there is snow everywhere. My dog was loving it, until some punk @ss little teenagers thought it would be a good idea to throw snow balls at her... So I, being the mature adult that I am, calmly walked over and politely put one of the teenager's head in the snow and buried him there... His "tough" friends started to cry... I won't lie, it felt good.
Then, at 4 in the morning, when the world is sleeping, my neighbor upstairs decides it would be a good idea to climb out his window onto his roof and start shoveling snow... Fine, I understand, he doesn't want his roof to collapse from the weight, I get it. But, every time he has a shovel full of snow, he bangs the metal shovel on the side of the building to clean it... above my window... Our building is 5 stories, so I put my jacket on, and walk downstairs to see what's happening. On the way down, the 3rd floor, 2nd floor, and 1st floor residents are all in the hallway wondering who's going to talk to the guy... I go out side in the below zero degree night, and yell to the roof. Now, my Chinese isn't bad, So I politely asked the man to nicely jump off the roof. He had the audacity to say I was sick in the head and he wasn't doing anything wrong, then threw snow at me and dared me to go to his house. So I, very angrily, ran up stairs and proceeded to pound on his door for five minutes. His wife was screaming at him, his daughter was terrified that the "crazy foreigner" was coming to kill them. He never opened the door... I had class at 8 this morning...
To top everything off, I got a cold and fever from going outside at 4 in the morning.... So I, being the mature adult I am, will be coughing and sneezing all over his door handle in the hopes he gets sick, has no health insurance, and dies.... Sometimes Chinese people can be so inconsiderate and selfish. After 5000 years of history, they haven't learned how to be civilized and be polite to their neighbors...
I feel better...
We had a dude hammering along upstairs last night (not a euphemism for naught bed gymnastics, this was actual "tool banging" (again, not another way of saying something dirty))
If there is one thing that is sure in this country, then it is that people don't give a shit about those around you.
If you've been here 3 years and this is your worst day, then you're pretty lucky.
However, the worst thing about it all is that you haven't even realized you've been brainwashed by the Chinese pseudo-scientific approach to medical understanding. "You do not get a cold by being cold" The Chinese believe otherwise, maybe some people in your home country still does, but any modern day research says otherwise.
DrMonkey:
Well, it's a bit like "It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudain stop". Being severely underclothed in the cold of the winter does not makes you sick. However, energy spent in immune defense is diverted to maintain yourself warm. Opportunistic virus & microbes jump on the opportunity. Those opportunist don't even need to be in the air. They were sleeping on you, waiting for your defense to lower a bit. So cold does not makes you sick, but it's a determining factor.
Scandinavian:
It's the idiot coughing without covering his mouth that makes you sick. Not the weather.
Scandinavian:
yes, but I am more correct. If you put people in a sterile but very cold environment, they would not get sick. If you put them in whatever climate they find most comfortable and put a guy with a virus next to them....
Errr, for the kids, no surprise there. They get shocked if action is taken against them. Usually they are not punished for childish mischief "because they are just kid". Kids are made of sugar and cotton, saying anything against them seems to be taboo or something (my observation, might be wrong). Sending back some snow balls and then telling them "not the dog" would have impressed them enough to stop them.
The guy oblivious to the nuisance he creates, typical too. I believe those people really have no idea that they might disturb people around them. That does not even exists in their mind. As said above, they grew up not being punished for mischief or broken glasses. I sadly don't know adequate behavior to deal with this, those guys are hopeless :(
if you are good at aiming throw some snowballs with stones inside at him, maybe he fall of his roof, make sure no witnesses around
I know exactly where you are coming from and I have been here as imilar amount of time, two and a half years, The things that really get to me are the rudeness of some people, the stupidity of others and the fact that everything is done just well enough for it to work for say six months. Then when it goes wrong they repair it in the same manner as it was originally made and we wait another six months. Systems don't work efficiently here and the though of retiring here is really more than I can think about. Added to that will be the civil unrest as the gap between rich and poor increases more than it is now, and we all know from other countries what happens when that gap gets too large. Do I want to be here then, hell no.
On the bus today, I saw a guy squeeze his water in between the handle part of the seat in front of him. Jabbing the that was sitting there in the neck. The guy that put the bottle there immediately put his head down acting as if he was doing something on his phone, ignoring what he had done. The other guy gave a look at the bottle and then adjusted his sitting position. They are so well trained not to stand up for themselves. And they couldn't figure out what I was laughing at.
Welcome to ECC! If I ever hear "But this is China!" ever again, I will take to the streets and attack random people with meat cleavers until the cops stop me.*
Fortunately, I don't have to hear this very often since I'm not in China anymore. However, I do have to hear the MIL constantly lecture me on how "The Chinese body is different from the American body; you must do things the Chinese way or you'll die/get sick/etc. (we did things the civilized, non-savage way and nobody got hurt)"
Oh, I have a rant to share... I was recently chatting with a group of Chinese mothers, and I told them that zuoyuezi (sitting in bed for a month) is dangerous and can kill people due to blood clots.
This invoked a psychotic response from some TCM/zuoyuezi fanatic (some of who said the women should lay in bed and not move for 3-4 months) who told everyone not to worry, and to go back to sitting in bed. "HOW DARE YOU SAY THIS TERRIBLE LIE? WHO LET HIM SAY THAT???? We must not allow the wind to move us (repeat 100 times). He is wrong. Zuoyuezi must be performed, the Chinese body is different from the American body."
My wife didn't sit on her ass for 3 months, she got up and walked around. She's not American. aRjkEWLTGLERGELLLJKFDLDKKLASGKLSETFG BUT THIS IS CHINA. BUT THIS IS THE CHINESE BODY. SDTGKLADFLGSFGJKTYUKJHQERGSDFNKASDFKGVERT *manic sounds continue indistinctly*

I found the perfect cure for BCDs, go to Philippines. I missed my plane outa here yesterday, something involving 3 bar fines, 8 of their friends, 5 bars. I've never been drunk in China, here OH man. If you want a REALLY good time, get the girls drunk, something I can't do in China.
