I just renewed my residence permit (Guangzhou, Guangdong)......last year I asked for 3 years and got 1 ... this year I asked for 2 years and got them. ..... it took 10 days and it was surprisingly simple...................I think the girls at the application desk have more to say about an application than just check the paperwork. application date was dec. 5, issue date dec.11 and pickup date was dec.16. The computer printed pickup date to be Dec.26 but the girl changed it with the stroke of a pen....to the 16th ................ did the same for the next person (we chatted after). 800RMB for a 1 year permit and 800RMB for a 2 year.....little odd. The paper checker girl also noticed and mentioned my 2 year application and "sort of" gave me a thumbs up as if this was a good/smart thing to do, in her opinion.

hmm, that's weird. what's your job? just wondering.

Good question.. Strange how it seem he/she is being represented by him or herself, it should be somebody from his or her company. Something is off. I feel as if this is a test question, meaning he wants to get a 2 year RP , but doesn't know if it'll work, so he makes up a bogus story and wants to see our replies, feedback and reactions to his post, therefore learn from it, thus try or not to try to apply for a 2 year visa.. reverse psychology..
Samm11:
yeah, it's possible. unless op will show up and provide us with more details.
op, where are you?
ironman510:
I'm in Shenzhen, 45 minutes away by train from where this person got their so called 2 year RP visa.
Samm11:
i asked my friends who are in dongguan and huizhou (also in guangdong). they never heard about it. so it's really doubtful...
I am on my second 1 year permit. I was expecting it to be more than 1 year as it is not the first residence permit, and prior to that several other visas. But no such luck for me. This was in June. Also Guangdong province, but different city, Zhuhai.
It is certainly worth going for the multi year, as 800Rmb saved is nice, and the hassle of going there is also lowered. (although last time was smooth for me, 7 days from application to pick up, no fuss about any of the documentation etc)
ironman510:
usually it's always 1 year. Unless your wife uses the spouse sponsorship from the PSB and can reach to 5 years. there is a clause for people with special skills and special majors to get 5 years easily.. but that's like in the medical field, engineering field and other special talented people..
Scandinavian:
this is a spousal residence permit, still only one year
ironman510:
Spouse sponsorship RP's can start at 3 months for none native city Hukou's, while for local Hukou folks can get 1 year first and thus none native Hukous and local Hukous can get longer RP's after continuesly renewing them, at least in Shenzhen.. What were your requirements to get it?
Scandinavian:
Several PSB people said it could only be a one year. It's the second spousal RP. No change in anything between the first and second (in terms of employment, address etc.)
Good, can you please provide more info?
ironman510:
I doubt we'll get any real evidence or information that this really happened.. His application process doesn't make any sense. The application isn't done by him, it's done by the company, because the company is sponsoring you. Not him sponsoring himself a RP visa.
The years of a residence permit is based off of how long your contract is.. and if your company makes enough money to allow you a longer then a 1 year RP..
It must have been in your contract that you're working and signed for 2 years, no PSB officer does this, I don't care what you think happened or if this is a true story, i feel as if your pulling our leg... I've already tried this gig after I heard about the 5 year visa deal years back.. the years of th3 Residence Permit are tied to the companies money, years signed in a contract and lastly your degree and skills..
I don't buy this story..
I renewed my RP (the new school I work for applied) and it cost 400 RMB (told by the school). So the 2 years for 800 sounds ok. (I am in Shandong). Rules , laws, and all other things change in China. I am also married and never looked into the possibility of getting an RP because of marriage . (I am working and the school pays). I'll apply for a D visa this year. My question is why FYI? (I am trying to get points, what about You?)
ironman510:
British pay 400 and Americans pay 800, its not 400 x 2 = 800 for 2 years..
ironman510:
If you've been married for 5 years and own a house and have a child you have a chance for a D Visa. I bought our house and have a child, so after 2 more years I'll also apply for the D Visa based on 5 years of marriage with owning house in China, child and 7 years of paying taxes and in the same company, if thats not showing China that we're stable and set here, then I don't know what will.
donnie3857:
I'll keep this sight posted to let you know how it works out with the D visa application. I wasn't aware that different countries are charged a different rate.
ironman510:
Yeah sad but true, we are, it's I scratch your back you scratch my back gig between the U.S and China.
This also happen to me this month in Shanghai, I applied for a extension due to not having the time for the medical and got a two year RP no medical.
I have a three year RP. And as the OP says, the decision seems to have been made by the woman at the desk in the GZ office. I filled the form in and in the space provided I asked for 3 years. I was told the woman can score out the "3" and write in "1".
As another poster above says, it is to do with the length of your employment contract. I have a three year contract so I got a three year RP.
I only got a one year work permit tho. But when my WP was renewed this year they gave me a two year one to cover remaining 2 years of my RP.
I am an Engineer ( my WP says "Specialist") working in a factory owned by a European company. There are about 700 workers employed in the factory. I am on a local Chinese contract and not on a high flyer "ex-pat" package.
It should be noted however that the company employed a very good legitimate agent to help. The agent also helped the company get their license to employ foreigners.
I have no job..... I am retired here in China
BHGAL:
and I am married to Chinese woman
and I have been here her now for 2 years and 3 months...I am Canadian, we pay 800RMB for a 1,2 or 3 year RPironman510:
So your wife sponsored you this RP at the PSB? Are you over 60 years old?
BHGAL:
I am 57 .... I don't know that she "sponsored" me... I put visiting relatives on my applications.
