if you have been in China long enough for you to be married with a 5 month old daughter you are no doubt very aware of how foreigners are viewed and treated by some locals.

In my home country the restaurant staff would be the ones keeping order preventing any problems.

they also would be the ones calling the police, ensuring an independent version of events was recounted.

whoever caused the problem here, regardless of nationality, would be the ones in trouble with the police: there would be enough witness statements taken from all to get a true version of events.

May I ask where are you from?

A number of things do not make sense in your story.

I am not a violent person but if someone is attacking my wife, I am going to fight back. If someone attacks my child, I am looking for anything to try and kill those individuals. You keep saying you are a foreigner as if it is a lie you are trying convince people is true. 

Now the story is believable. This is exactly why I tell people not to correct someone's  bad behavior. 

You mention how you are a foreigner over and over again, why do you need to ask us about how overseas Chinese are treated?

I would've taken out my gun and/or knife and blew them all to kingdom come. Attacking your entire family, including your 5 month old daughter, because you asked them to please keep quiet? Anyone coming after my daughter has only a bullet to the forking head to look FOREward to.

I would've killed them all. I don't give a shat what the consequences would be... I'd find them and forking kill them all.  Start carrying a knife... a really big one. Something you can give people neck-smileys with.

And then after that, beat the forking shat out of the stupid-ass cop for being corrupt. Actually, I think the cop was in on the scam. You better give him a gangland execution as well.

Look around... in the right places... there are guns and ammo in China if you really want to find it.

You are a foreigner and dining with family,so you want to show up as a hero. How can you knock their door when they are drunk . 

This has happened to me but with the odds in my favor, on a school morning I was driving and this guy wanted to pass me, he kept honking and i just ignored him but after he was able to pass me we met at a red light and he got out of his car and banged on my window buttttt there were 3 of us big guys in my car with tinted windows, he was surprised and backed off, he tried to run but my mate Jerry got the whole thing on video with his trusty iPhone 5, we took it to the police and the car plate number was tracked down and the man was brought in 4 hours later.. Later our Chinese HR walks in to help us and we all lost our attendance bonus for being late to work, so our clever HR shows an email copy of our contact in Chinese to the police for how much money we lose for being late to work and the police in the end made that speed devil man pay us all back our attendance bonus and he signed a sheet that if he was near us again he would be held responsible.

I can't say you did the right thing by not protecting your wife and baby, but in the heat of the moment, if you're not fighting them you should be video recording them.. This is your first line of defense...

They attacked your 5-month-old child? If this isn't an exaggeration, you must respond in kind. Take a chopstick, and with some careful aiming using 2 hands, ram it into his eyehole. It might kill him, but there can be no doubt as to why you were provoked to the attack. Hopefully, the issue will become so serious, that it supercedes any influence the local police connections have. You can explain yourself in a national court of justice.

I know advocating violence is usually very wrong, but normal foreigners can't let mobs of laozhong run around attacking our BABIES. Ask yourself honestly whether your account of events was an exaggeration. If not, you shouldn't have remained passive.

Then again, if you're a foreigner, you probably have the bulk to act as a meat shield instead. There are ways to protect your family without going on the offensive. In such a situation, truth matters little, and these racist attackers will say stuff no matter what happened. You can at least protect your family from harm during the course of actual events. Deal with what comes later when it comes.

I dispute that the OP is a "foreigner" as there are only two of us living in that part of the city.

Well that sounds ridiculous. China is a weird place and as I mentioned earlier... the louder the Chinese guy... the higher he thinks of himself (maybe has guan xi). 

I have to say you were wasting your time on asking drunk Chinese guys to "be quiet". You may as well as a leopard to change its spots....

Some more tactful ways to treat the situation:

1) If you can drink, gan bei with them further. Most Chinese men can't drink much bai jiu and will quickly pass out if you push them, just have another cup in the other hand as a chaser and spit it into there or something. 

2) Move tables, they are not going to quiet down. I find Chinese are already much louder than necessary when sober... when they are drunk... wow lol. Just change tables. 

3) When they attacked you, you should of went ape shit wild. Seriously, they are beating your wife and kid?

You should know Chinese are insecure, if a foreigner is telling them to quiet down they will take it as a shot against their manhood and nationality. This is even more so with liquid courage... use your head. Chinese are not that hard to figure out... just treat these kinds of people like retarded 10 year old children... manipulate, don't get into a head on conflict. 

if they attack the family, you pick up a chair and start swinging and never stop, they attack like packs of wolves, cowards on their own. take out the biggest one first, keep your back against the wall, attack from left to right twice and then change directions, always watch their shoulders the first one to move gets the hit and so on, use everything around you as a weapon and never, never, never stop until all of them are on the damn ground.
most men are right handed, put yourself in position where they have to use the left hand more and keep swinging, when you shove on to the wall, knee the side of his leg at the knee and now you have 4 left instead of five. pivot the left arm of the weakest fighter and swing behind him and use his body to slam into the strongest one.

I am against violence in any shape or form.

But in this case I would have just set the Mother in law on them.

Also, it sort of depends on who was in the place first. If they were already in the place and being noisy, I would have went somewhere else with my family.

You should've let it go and never said anything to begin with. That is my general rule I abide buy. I am a guest in this country and I have no right to correct someone's behavior. Because if I was in American and someone from China tried to tell me how to behave better (as if that were even possible), I would tell them to take their asses back to China.

I am with ScotsAlan when it comes to violence. I do not tolerate it, unless under the most dire of circumstances. But 5 drunk men coming after my baby? Two of the would gotten broken kneecaps, another two would've received two dislocated shoulders, and the last one I would leave him alone if he decided to back down after seeing his friends whimpering on the floor. Then I would've thrown 30,000rmb on the ground, high tailed my ass to the nearest American embassy until I could catch the next flight back to America.

Go find them and pay them compensation.

Compensate them with a bullet to the head.
