I have a very slow internet connection at home. I obviously had to pay a year in advance and I am not even able to work from home because any program fails to open because they have timed out loading for like 5 min. So i bought a VPN and nothing really changed. I can only access local sites. Is this normal? Can you recommend me a good Internet provider in Beijing?
Thanx

As far as I know, there's only one internet provider. There's no shopping around in China...at least as long as the internet remains state-controlled. VPNs tend to slow down connections even more. What you have to do is select a faster broadband option. It'll cost you more but should make a difference.

that is strictly speaking not true. China Telecom does of course have monopoly like market share, but there are alternatives. E.g. we can also get internet from our cable tv provider, and China Unicom also has fixed line data products. In some cases housing communities can also offer internet connections.
Where do you connect your VPN to?
And which country do you need to connect to to work from home?
If working from home to a Chinese working place, then VPN will not help you.
If working from your Chinese home to a foreign working place, then try connect to a VPN in Hong Kong or the country your work place is in.
