Q: Need technical suggestions, please.

I have a 4 Mb speed Internet connection thru China Mobile, part of a home phone, cell phone and Internet with them.

At first, I had 1 Mb, and was very slow and unreliable, so I upgraded to 2 Mb.  Still the same garbage.  So, this year they came up with 4 Mb with fiber optics, and I decided to give it a try.  Still slow as a molasses IV.

But, something funny started with the upgrade, I began to get disconnected from Internet.  My set up is a D-Link wireless connector.  It started maybe at night, and I will unplug the wireless, wait 15 seconds, plug it again, and back in business.  Every time the troubleshooter said the connection between the wireless and Internet was broken as a reason.

Now, it is a continuous occurrence, if I do manage to get into Internet when I turn my laptop on.  And makes no difference  what time of the day is, nor resetting the wireless will allow me to connect and get to Internet.  The troubleshooting now says to contact Internet provider if multiple tries at resetting do not work.  I did call them, and they claim it is not their problem.  Not even send a technician to check and see if anything is wrong.

Any ideas as to what could be happening, or if it is the wireless damaged, or China Mobile equipment problem either with lines or servers ?.  What should I look for or check ?

Suggestions will be welcomed and appreciated.  Thanks

How old is the wireless router. Our old router in Australia was dropping out more and more and was about 4 or 5 years old. After we got a new one it only very rarely drops out.

As Woody said, it is most likely your router, not your computer causing the problem.

And upgrading to a 'fiber optic' connection is just marketing hype.  First, a true fiber optic system is capable of being much, much faster than 4MB.  As I type this from the US, I am enjoying a 15MB non-fiber optic connection.  Man, I am going to miss this when I have to go back to China.

Second, in order for a fiber optic connection to really work, there needs to be a solid fiber optic connection between your computer and the internet provider servers.  If you are living in almost any building in China, I can pretty much guarantee that it isn't wired for fiber optic. unless of course they ran special cable just for you.  And even then, I seriously doubt it is a solid connection.

You may also want to try directly connecting your computer (with cable) to your router.  See if it does the same thing then.  If it does, then you need a new router.

Let me ask, does your connection cut out when the phone is being used?  Or at just random times?  If it is only when the phone is being used, then you need to get a little device that looks like a dual phone cable plug to put in your phone socket.  The internet company should be able to provide this.

And lastly, if you want to test your internet speed, try going to http://www.speedtest.net/

They are really useful for checking your speed at various points around the world.

Thanks ExPat John, I tested the speed, I have 3.8 Mb in downloading, and only 0.4 in uploading.  And yes, I was afraid I would need to buy a new DLink modem/router, I was trying not to since it is only 16 months old.  But with each passing day it is getting worse, and I do depend on it for Internet access for computers or satellite TV.

Todat, April 7, at 11 am, I finally got back access to Internet.  No problems with router/modem, but with cable out the building and area.  Funny, on April 3 I was told that everything was OK up to my front door after checking, problem was with my computer,  So, got my laptop and went to their offices and showed them it worked fine there, so my computer was not a problem.  I guess that did not do a lot for their "face" do.

To make a long story short, they send a crew out to check, and discovered the cable leading to our area of the city had "deteriorated" below standards, and had to be replaced.  That took 4 days of work, and now me, and hundreds of others, do enjoy full connectivity.  I wonder why the other hundreds of family never complained about the problem either.

Well, this is China, love it or leave it !
