This happens to me every once in a while here. I exceed the credit on my metro card and it displays something like -0.6 RMB on the turnstile as I'm exiting the station. My question is how far negative can you actually go with these cards?
Subway rides in Beijing are only 2 RMB, but if I wanted to take the "airport express" line which is like 30 RMB, would it let me if I started off with a positive balance. Also, can you still use it for new rides after you're in the negative, or does it lock out?

Once you're card has a negative balance you can't use it again to enter a subway. For example, if you enter the subway with 0.6 RMB on your card it's fine, and you'll leave with -1.4 RMB, though you can't reenter again if you're balance is in the negative.
When you are in the negative you can't do anything with it. I've never seen a negative...it usually gets close to 0 then I'm smart enough to recharge it.....(!!
I'd think if it were possible to run a negative, then everyone would and get a new card. TIC nothing is free.
