Q: New Canada/China 10 year visa
With the news that Canada and China has agreed to a reciprocal 10 year visa similar to the USA/China visa last November, a question comes to mind for my friend here in Vancouver.
How does this affect anyone planning to marry a Chinese national; I believe that one gets a renewable 1 to 5 years Resident permit after marrying a Chinese national and is not allowed to work. So doesn't it seem better NOT to apply for a spousal resident permit after marriage which has to be periodically renewed and just get a 10 year S or L visa although one is still not allowed to work? Additionally, this saves time with the paperwork necessary to obtain a Spousal permit.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, the criteria has not changed for getting the 10 year visa vs previous L visas........re invitation letter, no adverse records, family ties, etc.
I cannot think of any disadvantages of getting the 10 year visa vs the RP as it is a multiple entries visa and exiting to HK every 90 days is not an issue ........ unless there is a condition that one cannot continuously stay 10 years in China?
Getting a Q visa visa based on marriage is super easy these days and its multi-entry and don't have to leave every 90 days like you would on a 10 year visa. I heard the going price for the the 10 year visa done within china is Y8000... Yeah I love the idea of 10 years, but I don't like the 90 day exit sh*t.. Buttt the 10 year visa is a great backup.

Thankfully, exiting to HK every 90 days is not an issue as would be living in Guangzhou and there would be frequent visits to relatives in HK .
I read that the 10 year visa is $C145 or approximately 750 RMB and apparently is the same price as for a one year visa as my friend is still in Vancouver, so that is not an issue.
How many years is the Q visa normally for and is it free?

Sometimes the first one is 1 year or two years and than two years or one year again but after that you should get a 5 year Q. I think its Y800, it changes and depends on where you are in China.

So it seems to be a no brainer for my friend just to apply for the 10 year S or L visa in Vancouver for the one time fee of about 750 RMB rather than the more expensive Q visa which has to be renewed every few years and which will ultimately cost much more over the years...especially as exiting to HK every 90 days is not an issue
You must exit every 90 days and you can't work with it, it targets business travellers not expatriates, if you live full time in China you better choose a 1 year Z visa, renewing it takes 5 minutes and 2 trips to the PSB once a year, no need to exit again.

My friend do not intend to work, so do not need a Z visa..........the main idea is getting a 10 year visa in one trip to the Chinese Embassy in Vancouver may be better than having to renew the Q visa every so often; does that make sense or am I missing something?

You won't get such a visa without legit family ties.
With legit family ties you can get a Residence Permit anyway.

Understood, but it saves the "hassle" of having to renew the RP every so often..........family ties to get the visa is also a non issue as previously obtained two six month visas in the past two years as there are family ties in GZ.
this thing and its predecessors are so not newsworthy. applies to so few people. it is not going to make YOUR life easier. The guys/gals that will use it mostly couldn't give a shit one way or the other. Company or corporate travel plans and just read the e-mail and get to the airport when advised to do so.
Everyone gets excited around this while this is hardly newsworthy.
This is not a revolution. The only change here is that regular trippers, people whose entitlement to a visa was kinda granted anyway, can spare a go or two to the consulates. Nothing else.
But I forgot everyone already knew it since forever even before I made the research, if I may quote Ironman, which explains the number of topics and the misunderstandings in the way people commented this in the first place.

This is a good question. My guess is technically the 10 years visa isn't intended for residents, but for regular travelers, but in your case it looks like an option.
I do not know the specific conditions for obtaining such a visa.

the 10 year visa.....is only a 60 day stay then you must cross the freaking border somewhere, instead of a 90 day visit with a one year visa ....but Resident visa you dont have to leave every 90 days...........border runs are usually a drag and cost money, unless you live in Shenzhen..he he
i know of many foreigner who marry just so they dont or cant afford to fly to the states for a new visa every year.
