There's talk in various forums about new visa restrictions starting this year.Did any of you experience issues with visa applications since the beginning of 2013? More specifically: Is the HK visa run after after two L visa extensions still possible? Can HK visa agents still issue F visas without any paperwork? I'm looking for a way to spend a few months learning Mandarin in Shanghai. Appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.
I will have 3 months in a private school and I don't think they qualify to sponsor student visas.
I wonder what are my options if I have to take care of the visa on my own.
hey, i have the similar situation with you but im not in shanghai.. (well, probably is heading to shanghai by next month)
i entered china with tourist visa, you can apply for either one or two times entry with each entry you are allowed for 30 days stay so my advice is to choose the double entry and when the first month's entry finished just fly to HK for couple of days and come back to China for your second month.
after that, you can go to the local police station and ask for a registration using local address. after that, take the form to the some kind of bureau office, port entry or something like that, the one that administers entry for foreigners, i am sure shanghai has one, and then you can apply your staying visa there.
when i applied last year, i got a staying permit for 6 months until April 2013 but with no entry back meaning that if i go out from china, my staying permit becomes invalid so i have to apply for new visa to enter china..
hope it helps, and good luck
I found this link on the gokunming website. It has new information on the Z 1/2 and X 1/2 visas amongst other things.

Rin, there's big news in China visa law: Yesterday (July 22) the State Council published their final regulations implementing the new Exit-Entry Law. The regulations are in several ways better than the last draft circulated for public comment. For an English translation and Q&A, see http://www.LawAndBorder.com

Yes, haha, thanks I literally just saw that on Go Kunming too! This part is particularly interesting for me! :)
