I want to convert from Z residence permit, to an L visa with no residence permit, since I don't plan on working here anymore. Then I want to spend about 15 days traveling the country.
Best and easiest way to do it with the new laws? Thanks!

As I know, your Residence permit sponsor is required by Chinese Law to get you (at PSB) 30 days L visa at the end of the Contract, so new School has time to apply for RP extension. You are not obliged to take new employment, you can travel around China.
You'll find more info about that at PSB or FEB in your city.
Why don't you get a 1 year visa based on marriage. That way you are ahead of the game if you and your wife wants to visit China in the coming year.

We tried that a long time ago. They threw the pucking passport at us, and told us we couldn't leave her rural village. Puck that.

@Hulk, I don't agree on your 'not too keen to help us'! That is not help. They must do what Law require them to do! Of course, I am talking 'theory'!
I would demand 1Y L, based on marriage to Chinese citizen.
Go to FEB and ask them to guide you through that as 'foreigner'.
Okay, so I will be doing this in the next week or so. The PSB in Hebei told me I need 1) Approx 18,000 RMB in my bank to prove I have enough money to travel for a month (you can just show them an ATM receipt with balance) 2) Completed tourist visa application. 3) A letter from my current boss saying that I have completed the contract at the company. 4) Passport size photos. This is for a thirty day L visa. ( I asked if they issued shorter length ones cos to be honest I didn't have 18,000 RMB to hand, she said the amount of money you need is the same either way)
It's actually 100 US Dollars a day. 18,000 RMB is just an estimate.
You can go into the PSB on the final day of your visa to apply. It takes five working days and is dated thirty days from the day you started the application process. So if you apply on the 30th, pick it up on the 5th, your visa will have 25 days left.

Why did you say 'you'll travel'? 18 000Rmb? I have never had to show my Bank acc., but they might ask USA citizens about 'money on the acc.'.
icnif77:
I was guessing, you might be American. I think, you should send School rep. to PSB, and get you 30 days L.
I am not sure! Maybe, that's new Visa Law change.
