Q: NK again... "Why doesn't someone do something about him?"

Yep, once again, fatty has launched another missile test... against all UN resolutions and slaps on the wrist.

And what does Trump do about it?

Wonders what China, SK and Japan will do about it, of course.

ie - absolutely nothing!

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that stopping NK and fatty is actually the US' responsibility, and Trump shouldn't feel particularly impelled to do something.

It's just that it makes him look really really pathetic to try to act the tough guy, and then when nothing happens, he starts blaming others (China). And, as it turns out, he's asking/expecting China to get tough on NK.... completely ignoring the role that China has in this (ie, not much!)

Trump and his military have repeatedly issued thinly-veiled threats to fatty & NK..... and he keeps on ignoring them... daring them, even. Playing chicken only works if you've got the bollocks to actually play the game!

(ps - also, it makes Trump and the US look incredibly weak... similar to doing absolutely nothing in regards the SCS).

The Trump administration & I wanna thank the DPRK for joining in and celebrating the 4th of July with us and adding their free fireworks. It won't go noticed!

Because ( I think) after slaps on the wrist the only other option is a punch in the face which would lead to a full on fight and nobody really wants to go down that road because the consequences could be disastrous.

They probably think it's better to swallow a bit of pride and let him shoot a few missiles into the sea sometimes - and hope that's all he wants to do for now- than to risk escalating the situation.

Who cares? If they want to develop a nuke, good. If they use it, they're dead

That's what we've been saying for the last 10 years and probably 10 years again we'll still be talking about it.

TBH, Engles, that's my opinion as well.... they're a 'free' country...they have the 'right' to develop nuclear weapons if they want. It's what you do with them that counts.

This thread is more about the posturing and playing chicken than the actual development of missiles.

And everyone must be figuring Fatty knows that, and he must figure they know he knows that and they don't want to start something so he can continue to test his missiles for now.

Basically both sides probably just hope like hell the other side doesn't decide to change their approach to this but in the meantime continue as usual.

Open dialogue and de-escalate I would suggest. Start removing some sactions, reduce the military on the border and have a go at working at a solution as equals.

Yup, they are not a nice regime, but nor are many more that are seen as "good partners" on the world stage.

This is all a stupid Dr Strangelove standoff.  DPRK develop a missile, USA and it's partners point another 50 of their missiles at them. DPRK introduce a new tank, that's another 50 tank busting airplanes needed in the south. And so on.

I think at any one time there are 50K US troops in the south, plus those stationed in Japan etc..

Consider it from the point of view of Kim Jong-un. He and his Government most probably strongly believe their Juche system and want to defend it. It sounds perverse, but they see it as their duty to defend it. Just as Americans want to protect their constitution, or for Christians to defend their right to worship.

I agree with Trump that China is the key. But at the same time he is tying their hands  by insisting that China apply more sanctions. I would suggest let China do the talking. With Rex Tillerson and Putin involved.

And take Trumps Twitter away from him.

The end result of that, Scots, is that NK becomes a serious nuclear power. As long as no-one is firing them at other people, who cares.

But, if Fatty decides he wants to finally end the Korean War, then it's an issue.

The other issues i - as my OP was about - is what's the point of saying 'no', if nothing is actually done about it when the action keeps being done? Your suggestion basically is the same as "We'd rather you didn't, but if you want to then please feel free to continue".

Trump Calls China, Japan Leaders To Discuss North Korea, Gets A Warning From Beijing Instead

Confirming that US-Sino relations have deteriorated substantially in recent weeks, Xi issued an implied warning to the US president, saying US-China relations have been affected by "negative factors" since the two men met for the first time at the Mar-a-Lago summit in Florida in April, the state broadcaster China Central Television reported.

I wanna know what the darn CIA is doing !  Don't we have 007 type agents??  Can't one of those guys go in there and 'slip a mickey' on ol' Fatty?  Put the Kaboosh on his next Health Exam.  Revoke his 'Right to Breathe'?  Bring him a case of Snickers and slip some good ol Cyanide or Zyklon B ,if I remember my Holocaust right, in one of 'em. Tell him we are there to 'Save The Whales' ! and we need to start with him.  So we sail out to sea about 100km and set him Free!

WTF are those CIA guys doing anyway?  Probably pay them a hell of a salary.  Well, go earn it, dammit.

To quote iron man:

ironman510:

I think the DPRK is just playing the same game as they always do. I think Trump won't do anything.

Of course it is a game

North Korea is a pawn in the great game of China V US. Communisim V capatalisism

Consider this.

DPRK is bad... because the power passes from father to son.

Such a think could  never happen in a democracy, America or Canada for example. It could never happen there.

North Korea is bad because of nepotisim...

Aunties , uncles, sons, son in laws, wedding planners, camapigners, daughters.... all get power in corrupt government.

Political allies are sorted, business partners are promoted, none of them are elected.

Lies are told.

What family?

So Kimmy is a suicidal kid who can get all the money and women he wants. Considering his determination, I'm sure he'll have a 20 kt warhead on a missle by fall. (16 kt on Hiroshima - remember.) Under this scenario, he can extract concessions from China (Beijing and Shanghai) and Russia (Vladivostok). So while the big powers play chess, kimmy laughs all the way to the IMF. Now he can get food and medicine for his people and the technology too. All that with the wine, woman, and political power he has now. History is just repeating itself because no-one cares to learn history. Some guy was elected in a democracy, "Peace in our time " someone else once said. Putting THAAD on the ground was just political show. THAAD can be put on warships and submarines. The new missile's trajectory can take it to Alaska, Seattle (close to Vancouver), and Hawaii. I can see the Japanese demanding a change to their constitution (good work Beijing!) As much as I detest killing and war; Like Europe in the late 30's, war maybe the only solution to this issue.

Does anybody really believe the the North Korean regime is not truly NUTS? Going it ALONE in todays world is truly foolhardy.  USA has little to zero interest in overtaking the regime....  China would not be a good neighbor.      the China/Russia deescalation proposal is ludicrous, and they know it, so why do it?   posturing  .....

China is very adept at somewhat discrete abductions.

RAMBO   can pretty much do anything.

The hierarchy in DPRK is unknown, to me anyways,    but I do believe the snakes head could be a better option than a MOAB  at the nuclear experiment site.

read this earlier and somewhat agree    ...  just joing China   ...  like Tibet and Hong Kong and Taiwan and Xinjiang

I have another option....  Dennis Rodman should  purchase a section of land in delightful Texas....  build a wall/fence for security, few gyms and basketball courts amusement park type rides and a snow park ...  and invite KIM  and all his family and TRUSTED (does he have any?) comrades join him in a life of luxury.

Here's an idea. Since America has ships that are supposed to have the capability to shoot down ballistic missiles, why not shoot down the test missiles?

DPRK will get no data and it would demonstrate the futility of the exercise.

Stiggs:

It's a good idea and would annoy hell out of his fatness but it would probably mean having the boats sitting in the sea around the NK border permanently, then they'd need supply boats and transport boats for people to go back and forward and presumably bases for those boats in friendly nearby countries so it would no doubt be bigly expensive, and it would probably piss off China and damage relations with whatever countries were helping the U.S.

Really nothing anyone can do about North Korea. If America and its allies invades, NK will blast Seoul with hundreds of missiles destroying the city and basically destroying SK. NK would probably nuke Japan and if possible lob a nuke at Alaska and Hawaii. China obviously doesnt want NK to fold up and have millions of peasants crossing their border in masse. China and Russia would be dragged into a North Korean invasion sparking a wider war which might end up being WWIII.

Killing Kim Jong Un is possible but very difficult, and people organizing to try to kill him would be found out because about every third person is an informant. Kim has taken steps since he has taken power to liquidate anyone and everyone who can pose any threat to him. Most people are not going to risk not only their own lives, but also the lives of their whole familes for a fool errand. Besides, it is not just Kim Jong Un and everyone else is starving, there is an apparatus of wealthy, connected people who run the show there, and a lot of people there want the status quo if they are in power. The South Koreans dont want the NK regime to fall asunder because the SK'ers would have to take care of the millions of starving, backward people.

The shit cannot get worse really than it is, and we Americans have a saying "If nothing changes, nothing changes." I can totally see this bullshit with North Korea to last decades longer. The people are unable to overthrow Kim. The apparatus prohibits any real attempts at any kind of organization to form a coup, and the NK government holds all the guns and cards.

For myself, I would wish the NK'ers to have a government like China. Not asking for Jeffersonian Democracy here. Chinese people eat (and many are overweight now). Chinese can leave the country, watch foreign films and television shows, can travel within their country, and do not have to worship the State or the Leader.

No nation on Earth should have any kind of dealings whatsoever with North Korea and China and Russia should be shamed into supporting these murderous bastards, but remember China and the CCP supported Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge which made NK look like a Kid's Castle Kindergarten in comparison. Don't understand why the Chinese and the Russians have to be such dicks, but here we are.
