Q: No degree certificate but has got good IT skills, possible to get a work visa?

My boyfriend has done four years of Engineering school but dropped out last year with one year remaining, didn't go back to uni when he was supposed to ( completely his choice and he is totally happy with his decision, as for me I'm on the fence). He is really good, like hacker slash programmer slash developer extraordinaire... I know everyone always thinks their significant other is amazing, but trust me he is really good. Everyone here who has some big thing they cant solve ends up referred to him and at the end the reaction is always the same, they are all say to me hez a genius and they give him more gigs... but I know all this isn't what you wanna base your future on coz at some point you're gonna need a job right? And I just read somewhere on this site that unless you have a degree certificate, you cant get a working viza in China.
Right now we're both studying Chinese but i cant help but always wonder about the future. Do you think its possible for him to get a full time job in china even though he doesnt have a certificate or shud he just begin studyin for another degree?

Officially, no university degree = no foreign expert's license = no working permit/Z-visa.

Unofficially, in some smaller towns, it's more about who you know and who they might know at the PSB/FEB.

What Cooter said above; ^^^ also of course you can buy a degree certificate and 'most' Chinese employers, especially those who cannot legally supply you with a Z visa anyway, will recognise that. Heck I've even heard of people successfully using photo shopped copies of other peoples certificates.

Thanx!

By the way, i have a follow up question if you guys don't mind... some Chinese guy has been talking to him about partnering up and creating an app of some kind. The guy is semi-established, if they became co-founders of a tiny little venture..is there some sort of visa that covers that kind of arrangement?

Shining_brow:

Yes, it's an F (Business visa).

He'll have a much better chance of getting a F visa than a Z visa - as that doesn't have degree requirements. - only financial.

However, remember that the general Chinese business ethic is to screw your partner over as much as possible.

I know what you're saying about 'right now', however, your bf is a bit of an idiot in dropping his degree with only 1 year to go. At some point in the future, he should think about doing it, as many places will only look at pieces of paper - not true ability. Certainly, if he gets a job in his field, he'll have everyone saying they know better than him.... 1 year, and he gets some level of respect :)

yes you can.

but you should at least have 2 years working experience in this field.

you have to offer the working reference letter by your previous company.

Thanks, we looked into it and for now all is well :)

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
