If I am in the back of a black car and there is no seatbelt I actually get the driver  to stop so I can get out to lift the back seat up to get the belt buckle out.

I don't bother in city cabs because you are in a cage.

Chinese just don't seem conscious of safety. I know the most open minded liberal modern chinese and they still don't put their seatbelts on. They don't get that it will save your life, stopping you from hitting the windscreen at 90 kph. It will also stop that beeping noise when you don't put your seatbelt on. I went on a long distance car ride with a chinese friend and I got really angry at having to listen to that noise forever

When our baby was born 3 years ago, I turned up at the hospital with a car seat to take her home. Oh how the nurses all chuckled.

We decided the brother in law would carry our baby out to the awaiting car.... and he stepped straight out onto the road without looking... screech of brakes..... laughter all round.

I think being safety aware costs face. Because to be safety aware implies that you are not immortal.

Sometimes it's like living within a Marvel comic book. Surrounded by superhuman heroes. Safety? Nah..... spider sense will save me.

The fact that they don't wear seatbelts themselves isn't really what bothers me, although it is of course very stupid. What i want to know is why they deliberately put the belts in the back seat out of reach (at least, they do that in Zhengzhou). That's the part i don't comprehend.

Safety is not something they care much about. Driving the wrong way, no problem as long as there are no cameras.
