I just encountered a girl at the tofu stand who spoke as if she was one of those stuffed toys that squeak when you squeeze them. It reminded me of Chinese girls I encountered back home, who spoke with such a high-pitched voice that it didn't seem human. They were probably the preferred choice of mate for rich emigrees, that's why they were so common back home. There's no accounting for taste.
Then it struck me: I can't remember encountering any other "squeaky voiced" women in Sichuan, in all the years i've been here. Are they more common along the coast?
We have plenty down here in Southern Guangdong. Yesterday I was sitting at a cafe having a dessert with the wife, a woman is calling for her child. I am at a loss as to how she ever got a child with her voice. It was fit for a Disney cartoon, not the modern ones, but a post-war classic in Technicolor and all.
My mother-in-law has this syndrome. I call it "monkey-speech." She literally sounds like an animal when she talks. AROOOOOOO, ARAAAAAAAAAAH, AROOOOOOOOOOOOO, AROOOOOOOOOOOOOO. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, ARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, AROOOOOOOOO. That's all I can hear when she talks. I'm glad my wife is soft-spoken... well, unless she's angry, lol.
Lol, I have a friend whose daughter's English name is Mini. She is mini in size and voice... I sometimes hear it on the street here in my city in Zhejiang, but it's mostly from women being whiny about not getting their way or begging like small child. I hate it, my girlfriend spoke like that once and I told her " I am dating a 27 year old, not a 7 year old. Speak like an adult not like a child." She hasn't done it since in front of me. I just hate it. My coworkers do it sometimes, I tend to just walk away from them when they do.
