Q: Noisy Western Neighbors

OK I know this is ironic considering so many locals set fireworks at all untimely hours of the day etc. But basically, I have an apartment underneath some foreigners that work for the same company I work for. Each day/evening when not at work or out, they play loud music, make A LOT of noise and basically shown no regard for other people when it comes to loud sounds.

One of their guests which is always visiting does not seem to understand the workings of a door and how to a. Knock on it and b. Use the doorbell. Instead the person will stand outside the building and repeatedly shout the name of the person whose apartment it is, just to tell them to open the door. I find this very confusing as she has a phone as well.

The locals seem to be pissed off by it as well, yet never seem to do or say anything about it. I have no idea how long this has been going on for, as they have been living here longer than I have.

I can hear the crap ass music through the ceiling. Half tempted to go up and wrap the wires to the speakers around their necks to be honest. Should I complain? Or bite the bullet and let it go?

The locals would never complain about it, thus it continues. Have you asked them if they could lower their noise level ?

You cannot 'bite the bullet', because you must live there. I would go and tell them, the noise is disturbing you. If they wouldn't stop, I would do the same to them as they do it to you: 'get large speakers, and........put some music up anytime of the day (24h)'. I guess, if you'll get them with loud music, you should look at possibility to move away, too.

I live in the bottom apartment in the building with 6 floors. Every bottom apartment has small entrance garden. I am using my 'garden' as entry and exit point of my apartment. My 'garden' is full of empty bottles, empty cigarette boxes, and other trash, thrown by my neighbors, who live above me. They are all Chinese (and Uygurs), so I won't talk to them too much. I will tell School's rep. about garbage from the top floors. If they won't stop throwing garbage to 'my garden'cool, I'll empty my full garbage plastic bag in front of their entrance doors. Every time at the different door. I'll 'harmonize' them eventually!

Do something quick. I use to live next to noisy next door neighbors just like you have. If this keeps happening you'll probably get sleepless nights because I had the same problems. Just ask them to turn it down. If they don't turn it down get someone else of higher authority that can control their out of control behavior. (Drunk!

Step 1. At the time of the nuisance noise go to the flat and politely ask them to quieten down.
Step 2. If 1 doesn't work speak to them at work.

Step 3. If 1 & 2 doesn't work speak to one of your bosses at work.
Step 4. If 1 - 3 fails call the police (this will probably take about 20 attempts to get any action and is easier if you have a Chinese friend or neighbour to help you).

Step 5. If nothing works get a baseball bat and cure their haemorrhoids........................ devil

Let me ask y ou this: Would you "bite the bullet" if you were in the West? If not, then dont bite it now!  Tell them (politely but firmly) about the noise being unacceptable.  If they have an ounce of education, they will be more careful in the future.  If not, then complain to the landlord and have him/her deal with them.

As to the freinds who call out rather than knock or use the bell or phone, maybe you can dump the wash water on them>? Just a thought.....

I like the advice. Sadly I failed to mention how the landlord lives in the same building in the apartment above them, and I am on the ground floor cool

I've had the same type of neighbours when I was studying in Beijing. Loud music, loud movies, loud voices. I went to ask them several times to stay quiet but that changed nothing. I understand that because your neighbours work at the same company that you do, you don't want to heat things up.

What I did is go down to the management office of the complex and tell them about the problem. I gave them the building number, and apartment number and they told me to wait downstairs. They went in as a group and told the people to make less noise since the culture was different in China. At least that's what they told me. Regardless, that worked and I enjoyed the remaining 5 months quietly. Since the staff went in as a group in black uniform, the neighbours probably saw this as an official warning. I have heard that if tenants don't follow the rules in a complex, such as disturbing neighbours, and if there is official action taken, they can be expulsed by the landlord.

PS: If you don't want to confront your colleague directly and if the staff at your complex don't ask you to wait downstairs or to head back to your apartment, just tell them that you want to do it this way before to go see that person.

I send them a message asking to lower the volume and added a please. The reply I got was "ok, but it will be louder tonight sorry". I asked what time and they said "9:00 hahahahaha".

I live by myself and enjoy a party every once in a while, but not to the point of getting heavily drunk at every possible opportunity. Its bad enough when they get back from clubs at 6 am and still manage to wake everyone in the area up.

I know I sound like and old bastard. But that is probably because I AM AN OLD BASTARD.

So anyway, the volume is down, but the base is still high, and they still find the need to shout to each other.....

GuilinRaf:

Talk to the landlord.

You can also call the police (though you may need a local friend to help).

Who pays for your apartment?

If it is the company you work for make it their problem

If you can not sleep it affects your work performance

Better still invite your Boss over for a Coffee

and when your friends start their fun just say

Oh that is such and such from work they are a little quieter tonight

1 of 2 things will happen

the Boss will have something to say when they get to work next

or will dump you and go join the party

I had a similar problem in my youth

unfortunately  tossing a Bug bomb into a room is not as appropriate as you might think , according to the Judge at my hearing

Hugh.G.Rection:

Hehe similar problems when I was younger. I had some noisy neighbours but I used to run a disco and had some big disco speakers (about 250W iirc) so turned them against the adjoining wall and put on some Motorhead at full blast.

Trouble is my neighbours parents had a lot of crystal ornaments and about £500 worth got bounced off the furniture and smashed. Took me a long while to pay that off.

Anyone know where I can get a sledgehammer in Changsha at night? They are still going now, and are louder!

GuilinRaf:

Call the cops, or the landlord.

If language is an issue, have a friend talk to the cops for you.

Then, say "Sparky did it...".

If my memory seves me correctly you are a fellow Cumbrian, in which case you should be well aware of exactly which protocol to follow;

Step 1: Tell them in a not very polite matter to shut the f*** up.

Step 2: If they don't heed your warning, bray seven shades of the proverbial out of them. Step 3: Repeat as necessary.

GuilinRaf:

Or, if you are feeling really nasty, tape a sign on their door claiming that "certain islands" are Japanese....devil

Aaah Cumbria, I do miss the peace of the countryside. That and if people acted the way in which these C**ts are acting, then they would likely get a hiding or two. It is now 10:00pm and they are full swing into a party. The real problem is how they stay out until 6am every night. So if they don't stop in the next hour or so... I'm going to organise a party of my own to go round and kick their teeth into the back of their skulls! You know, Langdalian style frown

So, have you gotten yourself arrested yet....?

DaveP84:

Not yet. but the night is young! I have asked them politely, I have also done so a bit more agressively now. I have spoken with the boss, She replied saying that she called after receiving complaints from all the neighbors, apparently they agreed to turn the music down. Sadly they lied, and then proceeded to turn the base up ( So now my ceiling is booming) there is lots of shouting and screaming going on (I can only hope that the locals have banded together, and are killing them at this very moment). I will make sure first thing in the morning when they are trying to get their sleep, to set off some firecrackers that I just so happen to have in storage. With the help of the other neighbors of course.

flooding their apartment by putting a fire hose under their door could also solve your problemsmiley

I was amazed that Chinese seem to do nothing but watch at accidents or fights, look over my shoulder etc, snoopy but do nothing. I could often hear domestic fights and beatings and nothing was done. I heard construction noise all day. I had noisy girl friends at night. No complaints, but if I got into an argument with one, I sure heard about it. Of course I always denied it by asking if the language was Chinese or English and since most of the yelling was in Chinese, I could deny any part since I do not speak Chinese.

If I had a neighbor that bothered me and wouldn't quit if I tried reason, then I would conduct myself in a non-reasonable manner. I would be the road warrior neighbor. I could drive my scooter through the front door, trash the place with my scooter, yell and scream and maybe throw stuff out their windows. Its a lovely sentiment when you smash something with your scooter and before leaving yell ''I'll be back''.

I've actually done stuff like this on a motorcycle. I had a neighbor harrass me on the phone and call the cops for years and the noise was hardly ever me. One day I figured out who it was and gave him a warning, he didn't take it. His house went up for sale pretty fast later.

Why don't you just go to the front gate and tell the security guards? I'm surprised nobody has done it already (I've had a neighbor here that would complain about the sound of drops coming from my AC) ... If neighbors are doing construction after the legal time, I will just tell the guards to stop them... works every time

My sympathy. Right now there are 4 guys using jackhammers a couple of floors up from here. It's the 25th floor, I was just in the lobby, down there you can hear and feel it. I was glad to see that the workmen have been equipped for the job, among them no noise guards and was wearing a surgical mask. Thankfully the apartment is facing away from the pool so that is where I will be today.

this solution works everytime, go the nearest private training school unless you work for one already, find out which kids are getting free classes because dad or mom works for the psp,

offer them 5 private free lessons for their child,  to pay a visit to your neighbor and fix the problem.
