Q: Not being invited to a Chinese wedding....?

I have a Chinese boyfriend, and things are pretty serious. I've met his whole family, a number of his colleagues and friends, and we've made plans to go see my family back in Canada, as well as having plans to open a business together. I was planning to go spend a couple days with him next week, but he said it would have to wait because his good friend *just* asked him to be the best man at his wedding.

So...are there some sort of cultural reasons I wasn't invited? In the West the best man is expected to have a date to bring, and the best man would also have more than a week's notice...

Is it a money thing, a relationship issue, or just a complete and utter cultural difference? I hinted that I was interested in going, but he just said he'd be sure to take a lot of pictures and tell me all about it the next time I saw him.

He's usually pretty well-versed on the cultural differences since he's lived abroad in the past for a few years, but I think this one's just completely eluding him...and me!

Any ideas?

Based on my experience, you're better off not going.  If he's the best man, then he's probably going to be busy attending to his duties of hong bao collecting, drinking, emcee'ing, ushering, whatever.  Additionally, he'll be seated at a separate table just for those people who are "in the wedding", meaning you'll be sitting by yourself with a bunch of strangers.  Yeah, it happened to me.  The gf invited me to her cousin's wedding (she was one of the bridesmaids)....most boring thing I've ever been to.

I would even say your bf is being quite considerate by not inviting you Tongue
