Q: not a question, an opinion....ECC is going downhill

just think the decent  participants have left and we have a few too many jokers. I am one too, but the blend is just not there. It is not fun, when everybody is a bullshitter........a few here and there is good   .. mix it up, dammit.

actually what is needed is good quality questions about how to get by daily life in China. question that cannot be shot down with the usual "blah blah everything in China is crap", as hard as I find it to come up with such a question, certainly there must be some newcomers to the middle kingdom who are wondering about this and that.

I concur.  But nothing can be done about it.

I think it's partially due to admin having been a bit lazy. Tedious time-wasters like Spongebob need to be banned promptly and Answer of the Day needs to be updated frequently, so that worthwhile posters get an occasional little buzz for being awesome.

Honestly though, I think the change in mood is largely due to the changing socio-political climate in China. Thanks to Xi Jin Pig's promotion of suspicion, resentment and fantasies of revenge, Chinese attitudes have become quite un-funny in the last few years.

It is becoming more difficult for expats to maintain good-natured tolerance for Chinese stupidity. Especially once they perceive what is going on in the Chinese collective psyche.

ScotsAlan:

Nothing to do with China Samsara. It's down to right wing Republican empowerment. He who shouts loudest etc. I have seen the same thing in the UK with its racist political party's. Every country is the same. Populist partys that pander after the lowest common denominator vote. The uneducated hick that they have put the fear of God into. It's the classic case of religious brainwashing. We need to fight back. United.

Yes, perhaps you're right.  But what else have we got to do?

I finally relented (after holding out for more than 5 years) and bought a vpn the other day.  Paid for a 2 year subscription.  And I can't make it work at all.  This morning I can't even access my outlook email account.

It's because the few old timers that are left here basically have made it their life mission to chase away new users by providing useless answers to questions or often accusing new users of being trolls or wumaos. Then there's wave after wave or repeatitive racist or hate topics that gets old pretty fast unless your name is in the top users list you see to your right. Its more unproductive and uninformative than productive and informative to say the least.

Basically you've all been shitting in your backyard and now it stinks and nobody wants in.

Congratulations.

I'm a cat. I shit in the neighbour's garden.

I do agree that ppl get branded as Chinese way too often on here though. Some people are clearly not Chinese but due to the strangeness of their questions, ppl are quick to make judgements.

Ahh, bugger it!  I just had a look at that list and saw my name on it.  Damn.

However, I do think you're making a good point.

If I've offended you in the past, I'm sorry.

Perhaps it's because a lot of new users ARE trolls(wumaos to a much lesser degree).

The top trolls get banned, occasionally, but return.

Vicky and all her reincarnations, the Anonthy DiMarco/Traveler reincarnations, Silwer, Talkword, akkhan234, NiceBrice, Delphine86, cub, blellow, etc., all trolls. All have been banned at some point but return. Easy to spot, but it takes longer for each reincarnation to get banned again.

The drama creators, the narcissists, the attention-seekers, the baiters and the down-right insane are the cancer that is destroying the forum.

You can debate the merits of "free speech" and "ignore it if you don't like it" all you want - but there are those who want to censor/censure other's opinions and respond to threads that they, themselves, could have ignored.

'Tis the stuff of online "communication" these days.

Iron_Monkey:

Oh no I've attracted the leader, Sinobear.  Honestly do you really, genuinely think you've contributed more positive than negative to these forums? (Honest question, really)  You always seem to be picking fights, replying trolls or wumaos, and usually are the first to give a totally unhelpful answer to a legitimate question or just tossing shit up meaninglessly just to watch it hit the fan.

You guys have to understand hate groups attract other groups who challenge/oppose hate groups and make efforts to disrupt their activities and these forums have almost become a giant hate group so naturally you're going to attract others to try to disrupt things, que the trolls and wumaos.  If you want a cleaner analogy than you all shitting in your own backyard, think of yourselves as the "boss haters" Jack Welch talks about in his book; unfortunately it's only other boss haters that are going to be interested in associating themselves with you which is why ECC probably royally fails at attracting quality users but wins at attracting more haters.

It's ridiculous to think the problem is 100% trolls and wumaos.  I remember some months back when the anonymous function was removed the Admin clearly said some regular user(s?) would no longer be able to argue with themselves in threads anymore.

Anyways this was an opinion thread about the current condition of ECC so I thought I'd give my two cents because otherwise I've generally checked-out of contributing or participating in these ECC forums for the reasons in my original post.  If my account got deleted or ECC shut down tomorrow I wouldn't miss it a bit.

@Iron_Monkey: believe it or not, we have something in common – your post received at least three thumbs down before I saw it and therefore was “hidden.” I chose to open your post because I wanted to see what you said that caused the thumbs down.  Yes, I could have chosen to ignore it completely but I made a conscious decision to read it.

After reading what you read, I could have made a conscious decision to ignore it, ignore and thumb up or down, or respond. I chose to respond.

You stated your “two cents” and so did I.

If I said that you had no right to post what you did, am I not being hypocritical by exerting my “right” to “free speech” by denying you yours?

You stated your opinion as fact and took me to task for doing what you did. What does that make both of us?

I never said that 100% of the problems with this forum is because of trolls and wumaos but certainly a lot of the drama and decisiveness comes from those “new” posters who re-hash the same garbage as their reincarnations. Now, again, you may say, as some of the posters do, that you can simply choose to ignore posts. Again, my posts and threads can equally be ignored, so why do posters choose to confront me? Because I name names? That’s the way I am. Don’t like it? Ignore me, give me a thumbs-down, report my post/thread to the admin – neither here-nor-there to me.

It all boils down to making personal decisions and judgments – just don’t expect the snowflake treatment if someone calls you on it.

I disagree with "few old timers have left" I think there are many who once in a while reappear... I think the problem is, the old time posters do view this section often but feel not worth commenting. A new look or something drastically new should do the trick

tomcatflyer:

Exactly right. I usually look in once a day but often find nothing particularly worth commenting on or reading.. There are some good threads but compared with a couple of years ago the site seems somewhat flat and uninspring.

Scots is back.

Uphill from here.

It all comes down to Donald Trump. He is empowering the twats. He says what they want to hear. It gives them courage.

Scots is back to knock the twats down.
