If you have a cough or any kind of cold symptoms, they say you should go to a hospital. I don't think they mean a real hospital, just a clinic where you can get some medicine. It seems like one of those cases where they don't know the proper word. They seemed really worried when I said I'll be fine, I just need some rest and plenty of water.

MissA:

Yep, it was the same for me. They were really concerned, when I knew all I needed was a quiet room and some paracetamol.

It is not really hypochondria in my way of thinking, it is their absolute belief that doctors here know everything, and to top that off, they are infallible. So, if you sneeze, you must see doctor immediately !.  And no need to follow up visits, doctors here do not make mistakes.

OMG my gf is such a hypochondriac I thought it was just her.

The slight hint of a cold then it's off for a 2 hour IV drip and the hospital.  Menstrual cramps require cortisone shots...but if I offer her Advil liquid gels its no good.  Upset tummy...must go to hospital for medicine...Peptobismal is not enough.

She should get a VIP card to save money..

Yeah, it seems like they want the strongest stuff when it's not even necessary. I guess they feel like it's less of a risk...?

I want to know what they put into the IV's here, because it seems to be a "cure all!" Every time someone I know has been, they wind up getting the proverbial injection,.

TedDBayer:

I was actually going to ask this, a friend with a head ache went to hospital for injection, i offered tylenol, but no take. i wonder what it is?

They don't even know what it is. They get an IV drip because it's "medicine."

cooter:

I checked the drip bags during one of my IV trips to the hospital.  I was being treated for food poisoning (coming out both ends...full purge).  The 2 big bags were just a glucose//water mix and a Sodium/Potassium/Water mix...pretty standard to combat the dehydration.  The other 2 glass bottles appeared to be penicillin or some variation thereof and something to combat the nausea.  Anyways, I do think they actually prescribe different "medications" based on your symptoms....whether or not it's actually necessary is another discussion.

I have not been to any hospitals here but I went to get some medicine once and believe me it was a  big waste. The medicine they gave me did nothing and it ran out so fast. I went back home and applied for VA medical benefits which I should have gotten when I got out which was a long time ago. So I went to the VA hospital back home and they gave me some medicine that actually worked and it lasts for several months unlike the expensive medicine that i bought in China which cost me 20 times more than the medicine I get at the VA. Well that's because it's free! Just have to pay for shipping! Ain't life Grand! sad

Hospitals are horrid here. I would avoid it at all costs. I feel like if I. Go there, it will just make me worseee. It could be because I hate doctors? But really. I dislike hospitals.
Good medicine, that is effective, is hard to find, I find that even the simple pain killer here isn't as effective as the one I take back home. So whenever I have a friend coming, I'd kindly ask them to bring me a supply Smile

I thought the answer is obvious!

The locals are indoctrinated into thinking that you can't really do anything by yourself - you always need someone else with more experience and ability than you to get anything done right

Ignorance is bliss (if you get the glucose drip! Tongue)

Also, there is the idea of 'balance'. if something has happened to make you go out of balance (eg, stomach ache), then you need to see a professional to get you back into balance. Too bad that, while the idea might be ok, the implementation of it now sucks!!!

What I personally find totally sucksville, is I usually know what I need much better than they do - and often better than their doctors (and other professionals for other things in my life, such as my computer). And, in doing so, have to basically tell people here to shut up and let me do it my way....

TedDBayer:

yeah and they don't listen, it's ''I call my friend'', who can't or won't do anything, so nothing gets done.

I read drug store items aren't as good as from home, things like acetaminophen tablets come in much smaller doses. I can't survive without Tylenol. So going to a hospital may be the only way for treatment. They go to the hospital for headaches and get an injection, don't know what it is.

Jnusb416:

I brought several bottles of ibuprofen with me. I don't regret it. I know it works, so why mess with that?

I get Fenbid for my arthritis/gout, and find it's pretty good.

However, there was another med I needed a couple of years ago, and the dosage that was recommended was doing nothing for me. After checking online, I found I should be doubling that dosage for normal use... so I did, and I was fine!

So, yeah, from what I hear and read, the dosages here are about half our normal recommended.

(also handy having worked in a university that trained foreign students.. and I got on well with one of the Doc teachers :D)
