Q: One day job for the TV in China, any experience?

My friend just told me that the local TV here in Foshan needs foreigners for the Chinese new year, he doesn't have the details yet but he will ask another guy who works at the TV station. What should I expect?

Apparently they are having a hard time to find white monkeys, so I am in position to negotiate. How much $$$ can I milk out of them?

I've been white monkey once (hahaha Dr. Monkey hahaha), for a small local TV. I did it to help someone to build a portfolio, and eventually start a small media company. That person helped me a bit, I felt I could help.

I spend a day going from restaurant to restaurant, eating some nice dishes and say "hummm, ren hao shi" in front of the camera, with a bit of dialog before. No contract, I just ate for free. It was not very organized: zero preparation, all improvised. I had to learn my lines in 10 minutes, with barely a month of hasty Mandarin class under my belt. Of course, I was an awful actor, but anything was good enough, apparently. At the end of a long day, I was asked how much I wanted. I didn't expect anything, I was like "duuuuh, no idea". The guy gringed, the person I wanted to help looked embarrassed. The guy gave me 300 RMB. I guess I could have asked more, and it was for a small TV, and I look like Gollum with more clothes and teeth.

Depends what they want you to do.

I would insist on payment up front though.

I would insist on cash payment and not showing any ID as it is a violation of visa laws and there have in recent times been fake "opportunities" like this just to get foreigners to step into the wrong.

Why take the risk when you have so much money already? You know it contravenes the terms of your z visa even if your potential employers dont.

I got to model some leather jackets for a manufacturer in SZ.  I think it was 2008.... my memory doesn't work very good...

It was a lot of fun,,, we went out somewhere in some semi-deserted industrial area of Bao'an...  they had some motorcycles,, yes, real motorcycles , some pretty girls, and we did a photo shoot of us all standing around in leather jackets looking cool (or at least trying to). I actually wound up on their website,,, I thought it was pretty cool.

Anyway, I say go for it!  get what u can $-wise, but at this juncture I would be thinking more about how to work it so that they ask u back.... one thing leads to another u know...
