Would having certification (in addition to my degree) make me more marketable/ allow me a higher salary as an English teacher?
If yes (probably) what us the actual difference between TEFL and CELTA certificates?
What kind of costs/time commitment would i be looking at for online courses?

CELTA, DELTA, TEFL etc etc is almost useless in China. If you are a native speaker from the big 5 they would lay a red carpet for you. I am not saying this in anguish, self pity or otherwise. Just letting you know the reality here. Just being white (no racist remark intended) almost guarantees you a teaching job which will probably pay much much better than non whites. So there you have it. My 8 years in adult training plus an honors degree coupled with TEFL plus a stack of certifications don't mean a thing here.
CELTA is one of the most intensive English teacher training courses around.
There are several threads on how useful it is in China to have one:

the amount of time for an online TEFL varies - they say 160 hours
CELTA, on the other hand, is best not done online as there is observed teaching practice as part of the overall scoring process. In fact i don't know how it could be done legitimately online without compromising it very nature.
Having additional quailifications as a requirement seems to be very much up to individual employers. here is an example (apologies for any possible offence caused by the following section):
Being a white native speaking male will increase your possibility of getting a high salaried position when compared to being a female of African decent, regardless of qualifications/experience.

CELTA is done online only partially. You still have to meet to do the peer study/review and you still have to do some teaching hours in a school. You just complete the written part of the course online.
As for being more marketable, it's a hit and miss thing. Some places require one or the other, while, as the others have said, some places simply require you to be white.
If you know where you want to work, contact them and see if they require a CELTA or TEFL.
Any online certificate awarded after 2012 won't be accepted if done online.
