Q: Other languages popular in China besides Ingles?

Which is Spanish for English. Speaking of which - is that popular here? (Spanish I mean.) What other languages do Chinese people love to learn? I was surprised that some of old students spoke a bit of Arabic and Japanese.

Spanish is fairly popular, as well as French. As for other languages, and I'm no expert but they tell me many if not all Chinese speak Mandarin or Cantonese though I'm not sure if they love to learn these languages.

I read it can be easier to get a visa to Canada if Chinese speak French and apply to Quebec. I'm surprised there aren't more studying French.

Where would they learn Quebec French? We have French taught in our school, but Parisan French.

All Chinese government translators need to be fluent in two languages other than Chinese. And there are quite a lot of them.

German and Japanese seem to be quite popular. So are Russian and Korean.

The most popular by far is Korean. Also, although many people in China do not like Japan they do like Japanese things products so that is a given. I would also probably say some Spanish because everybody already knows communication is key and there are so many spanish speakers in this world that you can't ignore that fact!

My girlfriend speaks very little English, though her Spanish is quite good.

I have only met two Spanish speaking Chinese in all my years here in China.

GuilinRaf:

The Spanish word for English is "ingles" (stress on the last syllable).

My GF cannot quite get it, she says "Ingeleesh".

I would guess:

1. English ("world's language")
2. Russian (tradition, maybe fading away; still popular at the northern borders)

3. Japanese (business with neighbors; popular in Shanghai-Ningbo area)

4. Korean (business with neighbors)

5. Portuguese

6. Arabic

7. Spanish

French is just a quickly-fading hype caused by the French-Chinese culture year; many French universities offered open positions, but they will be quickly filled.

JustinF:

English "world language"? More like colonial imperialistic language.

According to my experience it's:

1) English, English, English, English and then

2) Japanese (due to Japan's proximity, trade, business connections etc.)

3) French (due to China's expansion to Africa)

Then German, Russian, Spanish, many would consider learning these languages kind of hobby or waste of time, that's too bad:(( C'est la vie.
