Q: Panic at a spot of rain?
Had a bit of a boring day downtown today. My wife wanted to go for lunch with her pals, and their kids etc.
Indecision, indecision, indecision. They spent more time talking about what to do next instead of actually doing anything.
Then I went out side for a smoke, came back and reported it was raining. An instant decision was made.... GO HOME. The tables were cleared, bags packed, and they were gone.
Why do Chinese fear a spot of rain so much?

I'm singing in the rain, just singing in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark up above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase ev'ry cloud from the place
Come on with the rain I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
Just singin' just singin' in the rain.
Kind of reminds me of America. The mere mention of snow and people are running to the store to buy out essentials. Schools get closed and people are told to stay home. Then the snow comes and it is only an inch or two on the ground.
ScotsAlan:
Bit more than an inch or two this year though. More like a yard or two.
It would be awesome to see snow like that.
Englteachted:
Are you ..... really that dumb? What the hell does this have to do with snow? The mere mention of a possible snow storm people prepare for the worst (by going outside to buy necessities) . God you are so dumb I can't even think straight.
Let's go back to the basics. A little bit of rain (currently) and people are afraid to leave the subway station, building or even the bus. And its just drizzling. they are afraid to death of even one little drop of rain. And you try to compare that to people preparing for a possible snow storm? When the weather report calls for flurries , a dusting of snow, or an inch or 2 of snow people do not run out to buy anything to prepare. People run out to prepare and schools are closed when there there is a storm system approaching. And that is the common sense approach . Because a storm system is unpredictable it could drop an inch or 2 feet. And people learned from experience that it is better to prepare for the worse. You clearly know nothing about living in America.
When it is drizzling, you know it is not raining hard. We're not talking about a rain storm just a damn shower.
I understand for whatever reason that you have an agenda to try and speak positive about China and slam America (Foreignland) but you are being completely ridiculous. There is 0 logic to the comparison. Here is how stupid you comparison is. Driver A 's check engine light comes on , He pulls over and waits for it to go off (afraid to death to drive with the check engine light on) Driver B's check engine light comes on, he drives to the mechanic to have everything checked out. You probably think they are both equally silly.
Quit while you're behind.
TCM says rain will kill you, I guess TCM is from the days of acid rain.
ScotsAlan:
The panic was amazing scan.... go go go. If we get wet we die.
Scandinavian:
I've once driven the car all the way up to the building, so close that wife and MIL could enter dryfeet during a typhoon.... They then decided it was raining too much to drive. We were going to a place with underground parking and direct access to the building, car was equipped with brand new tires of non-Chinese make so I would have guessed we'd made it there in safety and in record time as no other cars would be on the roads.
perhaps they are all made of sugar............and are afraid they will melt
(I read a short story years ago on this theme)
apologies for the necro-post
Mateusz:
Hmm, are they also made from spice... and/or everything nice?
Also, I guess 4 days might not qualify as full reanimation, but at least resuscitation.
Never really saw that myself. Seriously. I used to walk in the rain with some girls...
Yeah, this makes me laugh. They really freak out about rain. I think Scand hit the nail on the head. TCM thinks that you will cool down slightly inducing instant death. I would have thought by now that the thousands of years of people getting wet in the rain and not dying would have dispelled that thought.
tomcatflyer:
Just because you have not seen it happen does not mean it will not happen to you at the earliest opportunity.
Best example of this I saw was a few weeks ago when we were walking to a restaurant in a shower. We went under a bridge and all the ebike riders were there huddled together in the dry. The funny thing was they were all wearing protective rain gear but were afraid to even get that wet.
Cold water falls from the sky, and you are not afraid ? Fools, you fools ! Why don't you drink it while you are at it !!!
laowaigentleman:
It would probably burn judging from what's in the air.
Chinese are also afraid of the sun because they will get tan and "look like farmers" oblivious of the fact that such thoughts are already "like farmers" and they already think and behave like farmers all the time anyway.
So they don't like rain and sun, good thing China is perpetually shrouded in smog... I mean fog, don't throw me in a jail.

I'm singing in the rain, just singing in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark up above

The city I live in gets awfully dusty and dirty because it doesn't rain enough. The rain gives the city a sorely needed wash. I think some of the citizenry might also benefit from the ablutionary effects of a light shower.
They're afraid of everything here. It can be quite amusing.
Stiggs:
You're right, they really are scared of everything. Rain, sun, insects, dogs, cold water, weather that's colder or warmer than usual, fans, air conditioners, a runny nose ....
It's simple; they're gremlins. And the first rule is they can't get wet and notice how they also don't like the sun? But they're always eating after midnight which might explain the population explosion.
I will explain with my years of observation.
Simple :
They can not afford to have wet their only pair of shoes, or trousers, or the jacket. Because their homes does not have heater to make it dry. the infrared small "sun" does not helpo in this case a lot.
I do not say, all of them, but many people here wear same clothes for at least a Mon - Fri, if they have free weekend to wash it. working 7days a week, the choices are more limited. they probably have more than 1 spare pair of shoes, but you know, it has to match with cloth, or need to keep it "for future use" .
And some kind of superstition ,as mentioned above TCM BS, and so on. Luckily, my wife is fine, I gave her my umbrella today morning, while she send son to KG and me just wait under the tree for shuttle bus
I am manytimes wonder about that too. they block complete exit of metro station or from Shopping centre, while they have umbrellas in hands and waiting for God's sign ...
Now that I've thought about it, cold water is bad for healthy. Rain is cold water, like DrMonkey said. Cold water is falling out of the sky!!! RUN FOR IT!!!
ScotsAlan:
Yeah. Gods live in the sky. Do they prey to the gods to prevent rain, cos they dont want to die, then they blame the Gods for the drought when the crops fail? Too much rain is bad, but no rain is worse. Is this an example of lack of forward thinking ?
