I usually buy my plane tickets on ctrip. The thing is, I do this using USD virtual card from my country. Every time I check how much exactly I was charged I feel cheated. I tried to use my BOC debit card to pay but it says that the card is wrong (which is weird because as far as I know Chinese nationals can use debit cards to buy tickets). I wanted to know whether any of you guys have ever applied for a credit (even just virtual) card in China. Or is there any other solution to this problem?

I applied for CC at China Merchants Bank last year, and as I know it's possible for laowai to get CC. I also wanted CC for online purchases/tickets.
I had to supply some 10 docs. from my employer, and in the end manager told me, I cannot get CC, because I live and work in Fukang, and not in Urumqi, where I applied.
I will make another try to CMB CC in Henan. Soon.
In the meantime, you could ask Chinese to book tickets for you. In CMB, manager purchased tickets for EU traveling for me, and I gave her cash Rmb.
As for Ctrip, BOC debit cannot be used. Many others can. Construction, Merchants. BOC kind of sucks ass.
Can please somebody else confirm that Construction and Merchants debit can be used to pay on ctrip?

It's possible with CMB Visa/Mc ATM (Debit Gold account), but I suggest you stop in the branch, and ask them to do it for you/show you how.
