I have many Chinese friends but none of them have any real hobbies. None go to sculpture or painting classes, none take cooking classes, or dance lessons. Nothing.
I ask them and they say watching movies or reading books, but that's not a hobby.
Maybe I have strange friends, but so few people seem to have hobbies.
You have strange friends.
Chinese people generally have many random hobbies.
I admire it actually, my hobby is pretty much drinking and going to bars. Or eating and sitting on my ass at the computer.
-Needle crafts are big, I always see women doing needlepoint
-Pool is popular as is chess
-Sports, especially basketball
-Many people do seem to have no hobbies at all. I blame it on the school system.
There are many. Just take a walk around and observe. Off the top of my head I have seen people.
flying kites
cracking whips
spinning tops
playing checkers
mahjong
cards
all kinds of dancing
Tai chi
basketball
fishing
needlecraft
singing
playing musical instruments
skipping
badminton
ping pong
pool and billiards
that game they play kicking the large shuttlecock in the air
Hiking and camping is growing in popularity
In fact I would say a lot more people get out and about doing things in China than they do in Australia.
Sadly though this is more prevalent with older people as the younger generation spend their lives on computers and iPhones.

Everyone I know who plays Mahjong considers it an obsession...
I take up electric scooter drag racing, beer bottle collecting, girl collecting. I play shoulder tag when I walk down the street.

It's a private collection. Start your own. Fun to trade with your friends. But don't let them start texting you.
