How often will you be standing somewhere waiting for a taxi , waving them down as they drive passed you. And then someone else walks in front of you by a few feet so when a taxi finally does come they get it first.
haha , so annoying.
To me, it's the same as queue-cutting. Accepted as customary, and expected.
It's another way to steal an advantage over the laowei. Common, comical, and sad.
Have you ever played soccer or any other sports before? It's called going after it. Those who wait won't get to it first. When I use to play soccer they use to tell me go to the ball don't wait for the ball to come to you.
Meet them half way next time and you might get to the taxi before the other guy!
Amonk:
I don't mean to be rude, but that sort of behavior is considered rude in the west. Being a go-getter has nothing to do with cutting people off. To use the soccer metaphor, it's not like trying to steal the ball from an opponent, it's like cutting off a teammate and stealing the ball from him.
ChickMag:
China does not fair well for the meek, you need to be strong, be willing to compete, and be even aggressive at times. If you are not in a hurry then it doesn't matter, but if you are in a hurry then you have to TAKE that taxi just like taking the soccer ball.
SoFresh:
I agree in the west it's considered rude. I also agree that you have to be more aggressive in China when it comes to things like this.
I just give people "the eye" haha. No one dares to steal my taxi!
In this city, there's more taxis than there are people wanting to get in them, so there's rarely a problem. Occasionally someone will stand a little further up the road than me after I'd been waiting at a corner, so I'll walk a bit further up from them, and so goes our dance...
Even in the the cashier waiting line in supermarket , people try to go after you . Now I am like a kongfu sifu, I stop anyone trying to steal my place either by doing fast kongfu run after them or saying vulgar "HEY!".
Keep in mind that Chinese people do this to each other too, it's just how things are done. You have to be confident and have a strong 'presence' when in China.
That's one of the many little things that made me leave China. It used to drive me so mad. Such disregard towards others, I simply can not wrap my mind around it.
Several times a day. That's when Taxi Hulk steps in.
