Q: Pertaining to (those) perverted ESL teachers
Hey guys, I hope the title didn't cause any misunderstanding. The title is not to suggest anything about ESL teachers at all (I myself am one), which is why I added the modifier "those" as to suggest, I'm making a clarification towards a specific minority.
For starters, I'm an American, and I've done English work in China. I contribute to this forum although I've been thumbs downed by one guy, and been accused of being a "Chinese" by one poster before. My main point of making this forum, is, I am wondering how to dispose of such "teachers?" when they may be ingrained within the system.
One close Chinese friend I have has been complaining to me. They were a student of mine in a training center back in the Summer, and have since been doing university in another province. I'm in Jiang Su province, so there's really not much I can do. Even so, it's not like I'm in that school, either.
Anyway, the PROBLEM:
Said teacher's name is "TOM." He is from Austrailia, and he works in 皖西学院。 (wan xi xue yuan, in Anhui province) (I've got pictures of him too. He doesn't allow phones in the class, which suggests he's scared of something. But Chinese students always take pictures of their English teachers, and this guy is so offensive you can bet his little rule won't stop that.)
In his English class, it seems he is constantly asking perverted questions such as "what color of underwear are you wearing? Have you ever peed in your pants? Did you ever go to a bar? Did anybody ever pay you to dance?" This is outrageous!!!!!!!! I can't imagine why any normal person would ask these kinds of questions, as they are clearly sexual harassment. The guy sounds like a real slimeball.
To anybody working in a University type system, is there any advice that can be offered? What would be the worst nightmare for a guy like this?
I've also got a copy of a list of questions he asks his students, if anybody wants to see those for verification...
He apparently requires everybody to answer "yes" to this list of questions, so that it can easier facilitate a conversation along the means of what he is (apparently) looking for in English teaching. The question list is riddled with a few "friendly" duds, like "have you ever punched a baby in the face" but if you weed out the four/ five of these questions, you'll discover the other 15 are all sexually explicit material.
sounds like you're doing the right thing...to hell with that guy.
Don't let someone like that give you any kind of "esprit de corps" shit about sticking together as foreigners. That guy is your enemy because he can make you look bad. To say nothing of the moral implications.
You might just want to say something to your guys supervisor. Just let them know it's serious, at the uni level it's not like the students can't back you up.
Gathering evidence, showing that to his boss ? For the kids, that's just not right. This kind of person are flourishing on silence and cowardice.
PSB should give you right advice, IMO. You could even stop at SAFEA, depends where you'll find better English speaking Chinese official.
None of them will direct you to your home Embassy, I'm sure. Both are Gov. organizations, which know right way to deal with the info.
I think the best way is to gather as much evidence as you can, and then turn him in. Lists of the inappropriate questions would be a good start, but any video (or at least audio) evidence would be best. Once you have proof, go to the authorities.
I agree about not getting suckered into thinking that "teachers need to stick together" or "Westerners don't tell on each other". People like him contribute to the negative stereotypes that make it harder for the rest of us, and turning him in will show that we're not all like that. I know, this shouldn't be the case, and we shouldn't need to worry about stereotypes, but this is China, and such stereotypes are a reality.

OP won't accuse FT of anything, and authorities won't arrest FT on the spot, because somebody told them his 'suspicions' ! OP doesn't need to 'gather' (more) proof, IMO.
Police should (will) put FT on watch, and gather more info by themselves.
Once, I moved to the new School and big, 2 bedroom apartment. I'm not really 'intensive' new apartments cleaner, but I always clean in detail areas which I often use, as bathroom, my room, kitchen.
Few months passed, and when I was changing curtains in the living room, I found drugs paraphernalia (candle, metal spoon, syringe, no drugs...) in between double windows in the living room. I recognized stuff immediately, but I was too 'busy' with changing of the curtains.
Few weeks later, I put everything in the plastic bag, and handed to Principal at my School, with notion: 'This doesn't belong to me!'.
Few weeks later, Principal asked me, if I would teach English one of the city's MD. I agreed, and at our (only) meeting in the city Hospital, MD told me he's psychopathologist. I left Hospital totally wasted. My first time, I was drunk in the big Hospital. OIC = 'Only in China'.
Purpose of our meeting wasn't English lessons, but 'observation' by MD.
Later, they checked and observed FT, who occupied apartment before me. He left China in few months after that.
Make sure there's some documented evidence on him before you take him down - I'd hate to think an innocent teacher might be humiliated because of some malicious rumours spread by teenagers. Make sure these things are true - people act far too impulsively on rumours already. Secondly, be very careful when getting Chinese involved: You may think you're talking to the police, who will take lawful action, but they're basically cowards and schoolyard bullies, and will react accordingly. I remember reading a sad story of an American teacher being murdered for no reason, because of some falling out with his boss. After the long story written by/for the parents, one of the comments made the situation abundantly clear: It was his second time in China. The first time he had to be evacuated through an embassy due to some allegations that he'd been doing stuff with young teens. His second time in, an expat recognized him, and wondered what he was doing back so quickly. Naturally, he got into the same troubles again. He ended up dead. His parents had to sign a contract agreeing not to prosecute, before his body could be released from China. After autopsy, it was revealed that he wasn't hit by a truck, and it was clearly homicide. Long story short - don't involve anyone who might stand to lose a lot of face (and money) with the revalation, unless you want uncivilized things to happen to him as a result.

This story sounds fishy and I will tell you why. What does not allowing cellphones have to do with it? "Do you go to bars?", how is that sexual harassment? You should have stuck with the other questions only because that question gives your post a bad smell. Also lets look at how you worded ""what color of underwear are you wearing?" That is not a native English speaker, not American anyway. That is a Chinese English speaker.
Your post is BS and an attempt to do what Justin tried to do. Students at Universities complain when their teachers are unfit, so if this were true, someone would have already talked to him about it. Granted they are typically slow to fire teachers at universities
3 things gave you away, the bit about cell phones, the question about the bar ("do you go to a bar" is chinglish and not sexual harassment) and "My main point of making this forum, is,", "One close Chinese friend I have has been complaining to me" are more chinglish.

Who are you to place a monopoly on the English language? Are you unaware that different people speak differently? The way I phrased the question is precisely how I would ask it. I could care less how you consider "Americans" speak.

I'm white American. I would say, "What color of panties are you wearing?" Or, I might say, "What color are your panties?" I would say, "Have you ever been to a bar?" Though I don't know if I would classify the latter as sexual harassment. One more thing about the language issue, been here 4 freakin years now and I find myself adopting Chinglish sometimes when carelessly writing or speaking. Actually, after correcting Chinese essays for so long, you really do start to second guess yourself. I've noticed that I use spell check more often, and my English vocabulary has actually decreased because I am constantly "dumbing down" my English for the younger kids and my wife. So, I've grown accustomed to using elementary English to speak. Though typing on echinacities tends to help me to recall words that I, really, don't frequently use in China. Language is funny that way. If you don't use it, you lose it! So, boo to the poster that is judging someone who sounds American to me. Correct conjugation, verb tense, lack of slang and using an adverb instead of an adjective are usually telltale signs for me when identifying non native speakers. Damn thing won't let me hyphenate, and the spell check on this site is wrong.

Oh please Englteachted. You sound like a real prick. I think both points you identified are relevant. Number 1, the crux of your argument is based on the author being Chinese. Well, we have Asian Americans in the USA that still make the same grammar mistakes that Chinese nationals do. Different ethnic groups use different vernacular. Therefore, I felt the need to clarify that I was not an Asian American. It was the statement to clarify my demographics, not a racial comment. But of course, you turn it into a racial thing. It's a f*ckin sad day because I can't tell you what race I am without sounding racist. Ha! Number 2, I was making the point that maybe the author's choice of words was due to the fact that he/she lives in China and doesn't use English as much as he/she would back home. Sometimes, I use words in China to say something that I wouldn't normally use back home. This includes synonyms like "underwear" and "panties" and it also includes chinglish. My wife says, "I go to bed now." I've sadly adopted this. In short, I was refuting your shallow claim. You've gotta be dumb as rocks.

I have to say I think you're Chinese. Your sentence structure and misuse of certain words make it pretty obvious. Either way you certainly shouldn't be teaching English.

Of course his nationality is important. You have to look at the source to be able to ascertain the authenticity and the possible motive behind posting it. That's just common sense. Do you just take everything on the internet as being true?
